President Dan Crane rang the bell at 7:30 a.m. Then Pastor Jean Masiko gave a very nice invocation including special mention of Mike Henry.
Today we sang the National Anthem along with a video.
Then we said the Pledge of Allegiance.
President Dan says that the word from the country is from Audrey Hepburn who said “The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.”

President Dan showed many slides of photographs from last week’s activities starting with Tina Buss with Arch Klumph, then Gloria and her PHF award, and Al Ottinger last week’s speaker. Then we had the TT3 folks and some TT3 ads for food and some auction items. Finally there were some giant carrots from the Food Pantry.

TODAY is the Women’s Day meeting at Cedar Crest College. DG Linda Young is a featured speaker. Registration is open via the Chamber of Commerce.
Mar 11th, is the District Foundation Gala. Registration is closed.
- Service Project- assisting Miracle League with Easter event for special needs kids. We are collecting small individually wrapped candies, or small non-food items like stickers, to fill plastic Easter eggs. Also larger items can be donated to serve as raffle prizes. Deadline for donations is next Wednesday, March 13. The
March 23 evening meeting at the Holiday Inn will be an Easter egg stuffing party. Come help us with this project.
- May 6 Farm Fest at Ontelaunee Park. We need some volunteers to work a booth that day. Hours are from 10:30-6:30. If you can work a morning or afternoon shift please contact Ginny.
OFFSITE MEETING:
REMEMBER that our regular Wednesday morning meeting on March 22nd will take place in the Parkland High School Library. DO NOT COME TO LUTHER CREST. We need a headcount for food planning. The breakfast cost is $11 pp.
MIRACLE LEAGUE:
Ginny Sandoval is asking for donations of Individually Wrapped small packages of candy that can be available for the Easter event for the children. Need is by March 15th so they can be assembled later.
March DINING OUT will be at 6:00 P.M. on March 24th at Carmel Kitchen in Allentown. A signup sheet is going around.
March 28th is the Charter Event for the Whitehall Area Club. The cost will be $25. There are currently 19 people signed up as new members. Location is Fellowship Community in Whitehall. No alcohol is available.
A Rotary Leadership Institute meeting is scheduled for April 1st in Media. President Dan says it is good stuff.
April 8th Dennis Houser is leading a work detail in Ontelaunee Park.
April 29th is the Parkland Community Resource day and Ray Stock needs volunteers to staff the info table.
The annual Engineers Without Borders fundraiser is on April 30th.
Dan read a thank you note from Katelyn Morrison who really appreciates the Student of the Month award. She will attend Moravian College.
Dan noted and e-mail from A.J. Henry who sends her best regards to us.
Dan read an e-mail from the Webers who are finishing repairs from the flood in Hilton Head and hope to be back here late March.

Jeff Kistler thanked the club members for the support on the passing of his Father.
Dr. Jack Nuschke is an alumnus of the Camp Neidig program many decades ago, and said it was a fabulous experience. He thanks Rotarians for the good we do.
Ihor Fedoriw thanks Ginny Sandoval for the idea to take our visiting Ukrainians to a clay pigeon shoot.
PROGRAM:
Amir Famil introduced his friend Kevin Merlo who was our program today. Kevin now works for Wacker Chemical Corp., but previously worked for Air Products and Sherwin Williams. Kevin has had a lot of experience in the chemistry of paint products.
Kevin’s topic was all about The World of Paints and Coatings. He claims that he is a self-proclaimed paint Geek. His first declaration was “In the paint industry, you get what you pay for.”
With the $20 per gallon paints you get lower levels of latex particles and the various pigments and binders. As these amounts increase so does the quality. At the $60 / gal and up levels, the quality is good but the price goes even higher with not much gain.
There are two levels of paints, the Consumer d.i.y. level and the Contractors’ level. Sherwin Williams dominates the lower end paints and is used by contractors who spray new sheet rock, for example, and move on before it dries. The d.i.y. folks tend to have favorite brands and want the paint to last.
Kevin mentioned Gliddon and Behr as the better quality paints. And the user decides which to buy based on experience with spatter control and no brush strokes.
Kevin noted that almost all paints are water based. Oil based with solvents are mostly off the market. Also “flat” paints no longer are very popular. Users go for semi-gloss for better wear and washability.
Kevin believes that warranties on paints are overrated. People change colors a lot sooner than the warranty runs out.
