Bob Gordon was our greeter today along with shared responsibilities for IT support and announcing our speaker. Arch shared in the greeter duties. President Dan Crane rang the bell at 7:30 and called the meeting to order.

We sang the National Anthem along with Dan Wright, The One Man Quartet and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Jeanne Shipe gave a nice invocation on World Peace and asked for prayers for Wendy Weaver whose family has had 2 major setbacks this week.
No one guessed the “What is this” photo which was a squirrel that was rescued from Emmaus and taken on Wednesday to the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. “Leroy”, as of today was still holding his own!!
Gloria advises that help is needed for the food pantry. Please let her know if you can help.
Steve LaPierre was visiting from Emmaus this week………from the 2nd best club!!
Ronnee Klotz had a sign-up sheet going around for Dining Out at Morgans on Friday Sept 30th with 4 entrée choices. 1) Salmon topped with melted brie, tomatoes & a white wine cream sauce ($22.95) 2) Sauteed chicken topped with mushrooms, spinach & Marsala wine sauce ($18.95) 3) 12 oz. NY strip steak with mushrooms ($26.50)……what else is $26.50?????? 4) Penne Vodka – Penne paste in a blush sauce ($17.50)

Don’t forget that you can have breakfast with Arch Klumph for $26.50 and Dan Crane reminded us that in today’s dollars, that would equate to $536.00 so it would seem that $26.50 is a bargain.
Hope Pearson won the door prize donated by our greeter, Dr. Bob and Mike Henry’s ticket was picked for the 50-50 but once again………the elusive black marble was not drawn.
Ralph Witcher was fined because he forgot his pin.
Gloria Zimmerman announced that she received a letter (which Dan Crane read to us) from the Seipstown Grange, along with a check for $1,000 for the Snack Pack program.
Herb had $30.……..yes, $30 for happy dollars. $4 because he missed 4 meetings in a row and $26 because he hiked 260 miles on the Appalachian Trail (10%).
Sue Weber was fined for having her picture in the paper for the Parkland Garden Club.
Bill Weber had happy dollars because they had no traffic coming or going to Newark to pick up Marti and her flight was on time and her luggage did not get lost.
A big thank you went out to our speaker Dr. Otto for figuring out that the cable was plugged into the wrong port on the projector.

Today’s speaker, Dr. Allison Otto, gave a very insightful and eye opening talk on local trends in substance abuse. Here are some of her talking points:
The Lehigh Valley is facing a Heroin epidemic. In 2015 alone, there were 3,400 overdose deaths in PA, and opiates were present in 80% of the victims (Heroin present in 55%). 117 of these deaths were in Lehigh County alone. To date this year in Lehigh County, there have already been 95 overdose deaths.
- Prescription pills, particularly painkillers, are a "gateway" drug to Heroin, as well as to even more potent opiates, including a drug called Fentanyl, which is rising in popularity. Adolescents and young adults are particularly likely to abuse pills.
- Other synthetic drugs have risen in popularity over the last several years. Their ingredients are very inconsistent, and they are difficult to regulate. These include "K2," "Bath Salts," and "Molly."
- Prevention is key. Locking pills away in a safe place and disposing of unused pills is a great start. Most police precincts have pill disposal boxes or programs. Call your local precinct for more information to safely dispose of pills.
- Consider a referral for psychotherapy to address underlying psychological concerns before someone turns to substance use to cope.
- Treatment options for substance use include inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, 12-step programs like AA and NA, and psychotherapy.
- "Narcan" (Naloxone) is an overdose-reversal drug that is accessible to anyone, through their local pharmacy. In 2015, this drug saved hundreds of lives when administered by first responders in Pennsylvania.
