ROTARIAN of the WEEK:
The AW “Rotarian of the Week” is Dale Hostetter who joined Rotary in Lebanon, PA in 1991 and came to AWRC in 2005. Dale worked 40 years for Agway where he managed 75% of PA with 450 employees. He has been our club Treasurer since 2008. Dale is very proud of the program to provide fresh produce to the Food Pantry. He also is very proud of the generosity of AW Rotarians, much behind the scenes.
LUCK of the DRAW:
The door prize donated by Ralph was won by Bill Weber. Then Dan Crane snagged a white marble and did not win the $20 pot of the 50:50.
FINES:
S-a-A Don Davis fined Pastor Candi for arriving late and again for leaving early.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Candi is happy about the good works by Rotarians.
Bill Palmer is happy that we had such a great party Friday evening. And on Sunday he attended A Vespers service at the Lehigh University Chapel and heard his grandson Christopher sing a solo.
Wendy is happy that her sister and brother-in-law visited and they saw a great show at the State Theater and enjoyed a nice dinner together.
Halyna is happy that their son ran the 31 mile Ultra-Marathon in San Francisco. Also, daughter Christina, who works with the Peace Corps, is heading to The Gambia in Africa for six weeks.
Gloria noted that Bob Nagle and Mike Henry each had a birthday in the last week. We sang Happy Birthday to them.
Mitch noted that The Grace Lutheran Church in Macungie has great Sunday services, one of which includes the brass group in which he plays.
PROGRAM:
President Herb introduced Edward N. Cahn of Blank Rhome LLP Law to discuss Experiences of a Federal Judge. Ed joined our Rotary Club in 1965 and served as our President for the year 1969-1970. He left us when he was appointed as a Federal Judge and his office was in Philadelphia to start.
Ed joined Blank Rohm in 1999 as a Consultant. He has mediated over 1,000 cases. From 1975 to 1998 he was a U.S. District Judge. Ed holds a B.A. from Lehigh University and earned his LLB from Yale University in 1958.
Ed said that he likes Rotary, and today’s visit brings back thoughts of his High School days in Allentown. The Allentown Rotary club used to invite H.S. students to attend their meetings.
Judge Cahn proceeded to tell stories about legal cases that came before him. He told of the Jaycees in Philadelphia being sued by the home office for letting females join. Then he told of drug traffickers being recorded by police from their car and discussing selling counterfeit gold items to “dumb people, like doctors and lawyers. The jury heard that part.
Then there was a case where Buddy Hackett – the Comedian – upset the Mother of a 12 year old boy when discussing the suitability of his act for that boy. She ended up losing in court.
Ed discussed an important Constitutional issue regarding the Federal Draft program that only required males to register. Judge Ed said it was unconstitutional. The appeals court quickly ordered a ‘stay.’ And it was reversed a few months later. It’s noteworthy that the U.S. military last week ordered that females may go anywhere in combat now.
Then there was the case of price fixing by some sugar refiners with a case in Philadelphia and San Francisco which Ed got resolved. Then Ed disclosed that his Federal District geography also includes the U.S. Virgin Islands. There was a shortage of judges and Ed added the V.I. to his scope from 1989 to 1995 and spent his time there. He mentioned a case there that involved police cadets extorting money from illegal aliens, figuring the illegals would keep silent. They did not.
Ed had a big smile when he told of a labor case he heard in Allentown where a defendant addressed him as “Your Majesty.” He liked that.
Ed’s last story was of the Senatorial election to replace the late Senator John Heinz who died in a plane crash. The 17th amendment to the U.S. Constitution calls for a popular election of Senators. There was a suit to make things start with a primary election. Ed said “Yes.” The Appeal Court said “No.”
Judge Cahn closed by taking some questions.
CLOSING:
Halyna once again hit the right note to start a nice rendition of “America the Beautiful.” This was followed by the recitation of the Pledge to the Flag of the United States and then the saying “One profits most who serves the best.”
