Lowhill Food Pantry report

for September, 2016

-September 3rd hours:

-Don Davis picked up the produce on 9-2-2016. 563 lbs. of produce for $114.00

-Ray Stock, Chris Blechschmidt, Dan Crane and Donna Beach volunteered to distribute the produce.

-Items were red beets, potatoes, onions, sweet corn, cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes, lima beans, watermelons, eggplant, and apples

-September 14th hours:

-Nancy Handwerk picked up the produce. 120 lbs. of produce for $43.00

-Nancy and I volunteered to distribute the produce.

-Items were onions, tomatoes, broccoli, apples, sweet potatoes, red beets, and corn.

-September 15th hours:

-Nancy Handwerk and I picked up the produce. 563 lbs. of produce for $73.00

-Nancy and I volunteered to distribute the produce.

-Items were zucchini, green beans, broccoli, apples, onions, sweet corn, tomatoes and cabbage.

Thank you to all these Rotarians that gave of their time to help with this service project.

OUR 2016 DICTIONARY PROJECT

Now is the time to give your checks to Treasurer Dale Hostetter, or Bob Nagle, in support of this very rewarding project. Each Fall we distribute Dictionaries to 3^rd grade students in 11 Elementary schools. $50 will fund one classroom

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS for

THE MIRACLE LEAGUE HALLOWEEN PARTY

Dale Heffner needs help with the Miracle League Halloween Event. The event takes place on Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 with a rain date of Thursday, October 20th. AWRC is registered for a 10’ x 10’ booth.

· We’ll need a little help with set up, decorating, handing out candy and breakdown. Our students from Northwestern and Parkland typically help.

· From our club, we are looking for donations of Candy and Non-candy Items to hand out. They encourage us to bring candy galore. Candy to give out just as you would at your house.

In addition: we are asked to please bring 40 non-candy items. We do have some children who are unable to eat solid food. The children will be wearing a glowing pin to signify they will need a non-candy item. Ideas are as follows (but not limited to):

• Halloween socks, funny socks

• Small Stuffed Animals

• Bean bag animals

• Soft stress balls (for therapy)

• Fun bracelets or rings

• Something to connect on their wheelchair for a boy or a girl.

• Drinking straws – seasonal, loopy, twisty

• Party Favors from Party City

• http://www.orientaltrading.com has some pretty cool ideas that are cheap.

We are expecting about 450 children to trick-or-treat with us.

We are getting close to our 10/5 recruiting/networking event at Eight Oaks Distillery. Could everyone please try to advertise the event in order for it to be a success. We especially need help posting flyers and getting the word out in the Northwestern School District.

THURSDAY EVENING NOTES

Once again there were 15 of us at the September 22^nd Happy Hour meeting at the Holiday Inn. For a half hour we talked, snacked and enjoyed adult beverages. At 6:00 PM we moved to our business meeting room.

Sergeant-at-Arms Dennis Houser opened the meeting and we pledged the Flag. Dennis drew the winning raffle ticket and we welcomed Rachel, a guest of the club.

We did some Happy Dollars. Dennis is celebrating his birthday. Herb Klotz gave us some updates on our Purple Pinkie 5K Race to eradicate Polio. We need additional door prizes.

Ginny Sandoval, our AW Membership Chair, distributed a multi-page questionnaire that measures how members perceive how our Rotary Club is functioning. Each of us provided feedback. If this proves useful, the forms may go to the Wed. morning members too.

Meeting Notes Sept. 21, 2016

Our greeter today was Donna Beach along with co-greeter, Arch Klumph.. They both did a great job, although Arch was a little quiet.

We sang the Star Spangled Banner and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visiting Guests and Rotarians: Our only visitor today was our speaker, Guy Bieber.

Reminders and Announcements:

Reminder that the Bethlehem Rotary Club will be holding their Taste and Tunes on Sunday 10/2 at the Hotel Bethlehem.

The date for TT3 is missing from our recent Dates to Remember document. It will be held on April 23, 2017.

Herb Klotz tells us that he has spoken with Carol Ferguson from the Polio Survivors Network and she (along with a few others) will compete in the Purple Pinkie in their wheelchairs. Purple Pinkie is still in need of volunteers, prizes and participants.

Ri FOUNDATION GIVING INCENTIVES:

There are 2 programs open right now.

1. David Caccese reminds us that we are nearing the end of the designated amount for matching cash funds. Remember the funds will be matched up to $200 for donations to the RI Annual Fund.

2. The District 7430 is running a program to encourage NEW donors. If you are donating for the first time and give $100 to the RI Foundation Annual Fund, the District will assign 100 Recognition Points to your account toward a Paul Harris Fellow award.

Don’t forget about the Meet and Greet at 8 Oaks Distillery on OCTOBER 5^th from 5:30-7:30 PM. Please help get the word out. Herb tells us that the Central Bucks Rotary club had a similar event and they now have 100 candidates for membership.

Our Greeter for Wed. Sept. 28^th is Dale Hostetter, and our program is Diane Irish & Becca Middeke-Conlin on Family Promise.

LUCK OF THE DRAW:

Wendy Weaver won the door prize (breakfast) and she then pulled Geoff Legg’s ticket for the 50-50 (which is $15)…..Geoff did not pull the black marble.

FINES:

S-a-A Don Davis fined Ralph Witcher and Marlene Ritter for forgetting their pins. President Dan had multiple fines. He said things he shouldn’t have said. Dorothy Bloom was fined for leaving early.

HAPPY DOLLARS:

Mitch Huston told another fine joke and also announced that he will soon become the Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Phoebe Homes. Congratulations Mitch!!

Marlene had a Happy Dollar because she’s soon leaving on vacation.

Sue Weber had a Happy Dollar because they made it home safely from Hilton Head.

Mike Henry says he cheated death once again and made it home from a motorcycle trip in 90 degree weather with horrendous traffic.

Dale Hostetter was a walking advertisement for EBC today as payment for stickers for the Dictionary Project.

Herb had a Happy Dollar because his 1 year old granddaughter took her first steps.

PROGRAM:

Today’s Speaker: Guy R. Bieber telling the Buffalo Bill Cody story.

Guy resides in Lower Macungie Township and has been married to his wife, Linda, for 20 years. He has a son, Adam. He was employed by Lower Macungie Township for 42 years before his retirement in January 2015.

He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard from 1970-1976. He is a member of Jerusalem “Red” Union Church in Kempton, PA where he is the Sunday School Superintendent and Treasurer and also an adult Sunday School teacher.

Guy is a member of various Masonic organizations: Lehigh Lodge, L. V. Day Lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite bodies, Rajah Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star. His hobbies include hunting and trapping and raising chickens and turkeys.

Guy has portrayed Buffalo Bill Cody since 1990. He came to us today in full and appropriate costume.

Guy gave an enthusiastic and riveting performance, autobiographically speaking, consisting of his life’s adventures as Buffalo Bill Cody. He recounted his adventures, successes, and close calls with the buffalo and the Indians. He remarked with great respect about the Indians, their perspective and their struggles. He portrayed Buffalo Bill as a thoughtful, serious, and compassionate man. He gave a wonderful program, indeed, with much to ponder.

Our thanks go to Guy.
