Meeting Notes February 25, 2015
Our Greeter this morning was Vasu Vasusdevan and he did an excellent job.
President Barbara rang the bell at 7:30 a.m. Rev. Jeff Kistler gave a very special invocation.
GUESTS:
Steve LaPierre (Emmaus RC); Dorothy Bloom; and our Youth Exchange student, Roberto Reyes. Also Daryl Smith was with us.
YOUTH EXCHANGE REPORT:
Roberto told us that with the new semester came new courses of study and challenges. He plans to try out for the baseball team. And a few weeks ago the YE students went skiing and snowboarding with Roberto doing the latter.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Barb made note that Dawn Costello has just returned home from a hospital stay. Also Don Grammes currently is at the Lehigh Center.
George Ikeda celebrated his 93rd birthday yesterday. Congratulations, George. We sang “Happy Birthday” and it sounded pretty good.
Tomorrow evening Feb 26th is the next AWRC evening meeting. The 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month will be evening meetings from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED; PLEASE CONTACT BARBARA.
Next Wed March 4th is Snack Packing at Northwestern Lehigh H.S.
The Burkholders with a party of 15 relatives visited the Lowhill Township Food Pantry and were most impressed with the operation..
Our February Dining Out will be at Louie’s restaurant on February 27th starting at 6:00 P.M. Today is the last chance to sign up with AJ for it.
Barb announced a special initiative starting right now and called “Purses for Polio” See detail below.
On Friday March 27th AW Rotarians will have a JOINT LUNCHTIME MEETING with the Allentown RC at the Renaissance Hotel where the Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.N. will be featured.
REGISTER IN ADVANCE at allentownrotary.org. AWRC will have an information table at this meeting.
Our regular Wed a.m. breakfast meeting STILL will be held that week.
Gwenn announced that the Curious Goods at the Bake Oven Inn have agreed to be part of our May 3rd Tempting Tastes event.
The T.T. Committee will meet Friday Feb 27th at Jordan Church.
The Greeter scheduled for the March 4th meeting is Mustafa. The program will be our own George Ikeda telling a part of his real life story.
GAMBLING:
The door prize gift donated by Vasu was won by Jeanne . The $60 pot of the 50:50 was not won by Vasu who selected a white marble.
FINES:
S-a-A Don Davis fined Daryl for not having his badge.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Don collected a dollar from all present in recognition of George’s birthday.
Dan Crane was happy to report that he and Geoff went ice fishing and caught double the fish of last year -- still none.
Al Lewis had an unhappy dollar because he comes to us in the Winter to be warmer than in Saranac, which just is not happening.
Bill Palmer noted that Monday February 23rd was Rotary’s 110th Birthday.
Steve LaPierre gave a dollar for George plus one for himself because today is his birthday. He sang “Happy Birthday” the way they do it at the Emmaus RC meetings --- it ends with “….down in the Valley.”
PROGRAM:
President Barbara introduced member Jeanne Shipe to present her Classification Talk. She was inducted last April. She “Googled” Classification Talk and determined that it was to be 3 minutes long. Since that has never been the case at AWRC, she planned for the full 20 minutes to tell us “What do I do?,” and “Why do I do it?”
“I love helping people and giving back” says Jeanne. When she was a “batty” 13 year old, her Mother told her “Be a Giver, not a Taker, and you’ll be happy.” And her Dad told corny jokes regularly. Jeanne joined Rotary to meet people, do good, and to have fun.
Jeanne earned her MBA degree over 10 years ago and is doing what she planned to do a long time back -- and loves it. It started in 10th grade when she was the Treasurer for a national club. In her 20’s she took an H&R Block tax course just for fun. And she is a “glass-half-full” person who makes many contingency plans.
In her financial planning world Jeanne says that she helps people find the money they are losing through “wealth Transfer.” She displayed a pie chart with 3 portions: Life Style, Accumulated, and Transfer. Her experience includes work with a Brokerage and Insurance Co., then just with a Brokerage Co. and then with a Bank. So she is experienced and has taken all of the CFP training courses,
Her approach to planning is to ask “How ready are you for retirement?: how long will you have to work?; and how much must you save or adjust your life style? She noted that mistakes in poor or no estate planning are a significant problem. Jeanne says that her focus is to plug the holes so the money stays in the bucket.
Jeanne has a life-long love of travel and the outdoors. She has visited all 50 U.S. states as well as all seven continents. She is an avid skier, works in her garden and walks her dog a lot. She married Gary in 2003 and gained two terrific step-daughters. And she lost Gary in 2010 when he died playing softball.
Jeanne wrapped up her presentation with a quiz for fun that shared other facts of her life. This included the names of some school mascots, the fact that she can identify 10 different types of evergreens, that she met her boyfriend John at grief counselling, and her MBA is from Penn State.
CLOSING:
President Barbara hit the right note to start us singing a good rendition of “God Bless America.” This was followed by the recitation of the Pledge to the Flag of the United States and then the saying “One profits most who serves the best.”
