DISTRICT NEWS:
Herb -- as the District 7430 Membership Chair for 2016-17 -- said that on May 23rd the District 7430 Executive Committee authorized a plan to start a new Rotary Club in the Whitehall and east area. Our guest, Laura Long is here today to see what Rotary is all about, and we hope she will be part of this effort.
RI FOUNDATION RECOGNITION:
Dawn Costello was recognized with a new pin, necklace and citation by Foundation Chair David Caccese for achieving the level-1 of “Major Donor,” which is $10,000 or more. Congratulations, Dawn, and thank you.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Herb showed some photos from the May 17th Million Dollar Dinner where we met and heard from the world-wide President of Rotary International.
Last Wednesday at LCCC we awarded 11 $1,000 scholarships. President Herb extends the thanks of us all to Barbara Kistler and Hope Pearson, as well as Dale Utt’s committee.
May 18th was snack packing at Parkland HS where 170 packs were assembled in but 23 minutes. Wow! Then Jean Masiko told the Parkland Interact club students that they had earned an RI Presidential Citation for this Rotary year.
May 18 and 19 we volunteering at the Lowhill Food Pantry. Thanks.
May 22nd SUNDAY, was the Rodale Park work party complete with mangos with the donuts, See separate article.
TODAY. May 25th is snack packing at NWL HS.
TOMORROW, May 26th is the next Thursday Evening Happy Hour meeting at the Holiday Inn. Join us and bring family and other friends. Featured will be Cindy ^ Guy Rosevelt giving a joint Classification Talk.
A Purple Pinkie Race committee meeting will follow at 6:30 PM.
Our Wed. June 1st regular a.m. meeting will be held at Northwestern Middle school with the Interact students there. Jen Holbrook and Pete McKnight who traveled to Sierra Leone in March will speak to us.
Jun 4th Saturday, we need volunteers for the Lowhill Food Pantry.
June 5th , Sunday at 1:45 P.M. we can use more volunteers at the Miracle League baseball game. Try it; you will feel gooood.
June 20th, Monday evening, is the annual Camp Neidig BBQ and closing ceremony. It always is great.
June 24th Friday is Dining Out at 29 Cooks in Emmaus; price is $25 per person, and we will be treated to a BBQ Blowout menu. BYOB.
June 29th Wednesday at our regular meeting we will conduct our annual Changeover. Let’s all attend to welcome Dan Crane as our next President. Bring family and friends.
Next week our MEETING is at the NORTHWESTERN MIDDLE SCHOOL. The scheduled Greeter is Randy Beitler and we will be joined by the Interact students.
RI CONVENTION 2017 SAVE MONEY:
The RI annual convention next year will be in Atlanta, GA June 10 to 14. A Very special registration rate of $265, is available only from May 28th to June 8th 2016 at riconvention.org. A year from now the rate will be about $500.

Today, Dale Hostetter won the door prize breakfast. Then Jean Masiko’s ticket was drawn and she pulled out the elusive black marble and won the $235 in the 50:50 pot. So next week we start over.
FINES:
S-a-A Don Davis fined some folks, as usual, for late arrival and early departure.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Geoff Legg is most happy to report that over the weekend -- without Don Davis -- he went fishing in the Catskills and caught 17 fish in 45 minutes. Mike Henry mentioned something about cherry bombs and a net.
Dale Hostetter is pleased to report that he has closed on the sale of his rental house.
Mike Henry -- with a wide grin -- announced that Tempting Tastes 2 has yielded about $34,000 to fund our good works. Yeah team!
Mitch Huston told us about a special Memorial Day event in Bethlehem called “Taps Over Bethlehem” where 40 trumpets are spaced over a 3 mile stretch all playing taps starting at 8:00 a.m.
Mitch also attended a York, Maine Rotary club meeting, and he noted there were no fines for anything. And he brought back a banner and presented it to Herb.
Steve LaPierre paid a dollar to tell the story about how at TT2 somebody named Michaela got others to bid up the price Steve had to pay for Ginny Sandoval’s donated Sangria Pitcher. Tsk. Tsk.
Chris Blechschmidt is delighted to report that his wife now has her Doctorate Degree and he is more financially secure because of it.
Dan Crane was happy to pay $9 for his nine Rodale Park volunteers. Then he added a dollar for Geoff Legg’s “Fish” story.
Joe Goll is most happy that his daughter in Kansas City is in labor right now. And his son is getting married in Philadelphia this Sunday.
Their granddaughter is Kayley Thilges and the daughter-in-law is Courtney.
Jean Masiko thanked Steve LaPierre.
Dawn Costello is happy that her granddaughter Maddie got some good publicity in the Northwestern Press article last week. Maddie won a gold medal in the 800 meter League competition.
ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK:
President Herb announced that Ginny Sandoval is our Rotarian of the week, and she will give her Classification Talk next. When Ginny dame into the Allentown area she checked around for Rotary clubs. She dropped into one of our Thursday evening Happy Hour meetings, was welcomed warmly, and has been with us ever since. And she is our new Membership Chair going forward.
PROGRAM:
Our program today was a Classification Talk by Virginia “Ginny” Sandoval complete with slides. Ginny was born and raised in Newburgh, New York. She grew up as a “latch-key” kid in a household with two sisters and 3 half-sisters. With the 20 year age span, she effectively has four “Moms.”
Ginny studied French in Quebec and later was able to teach it. She attended the NY State University in Oneonta, NY and studied Fashion Design. In 1994 she married a West Point graduate and moved to Alabama.
In Alabama she worked in retail management, and then began travel planning and soon knew all about Atlanta and the Gulf coast. Later they moved to Kansas and she worked at Kansas State University.
Their next military move was to Fort Drum, NY where winter is tough and she loved it. And from there she explored the Northeast. She was a retail manager for a while and then a tutor and an advocate working with children. She also became responsible to keep the morale up for the other military wives. And she did some event planning and fundraising,
In 1999 they were sent to Germany and she was pregnant with their first child there. She again was responsible for spouses’ morale, and she arrange to take them on trips to see Europe, visiting 16 countries with her new baby. And she was the American President of the German-American Club. And in Germany she was the Chief event planner, and her son was born in Bavaria.
Then they were sent to Leavenworth, Kansas after being away for five years. She taught English to spouses and in elementary school. And she attended night school and earned a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Human Resources.
The 9-11 terror event changed everything. Her husband was sent to Baghdad for 13 months. During this time she home-schooled her kids. Then her husband was deployed to Afghanistan and she was in Hartford, MD. She was without him for a long time, but she was active in the PTA and was an Art & Math team manager, and a Patriot Mom.
The next assignment was in Valencia, Spain and she was in charge of spouses’ morale again including some NATO wives. She tutored French and did travel planning once more.
Ginny is happy to be here and in Rotary. Now she is planning travels around PA for the family. She likes:
Dancing, especially Latin
Cooking, from scratch
Eating what got cooked
Outdoor sports, especially in the snow
Playing games, especially pin ball
Reading anything
Travel – she’s addicted to it
And she will be studying for a Doctorate Degree.
CLOSING:
Herb Klotz hit the right note to start us on a nice rendition of “God Bless America” Then we recited the Pledge to the Flag of the United States and then the saying “One profits most who serves the best.”
