Meeting Notes MAY 20, 2015
Today’s meeting was held at LCCC as part of our annual scholarship Awards program with about 50 people attending. . Our Greeter this morning was Gwenn Carr and she did an excellent job.
President Barbara rang the bell at 7:30 a.m. Rev. Jeff Kistler gave a very nice timely invocation.
GUESTS:
Sue Bryant representing the Parkland Press; the General Manager of Amazon in the LV; LCCC President, Dr. Ann Bieber. Students, Parents and Faculty members.
President Barbara introduced Dr. Ann Bieber who welcomed all of us to the LCCC campus and this special event. She noted that LCCC will begin celebrating its 26th year this August.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Our next Thursday evening meeting at the Holiday Inn will be May 28th.
The Snack Packing at Parkland is on May 27th. More volunteers are needed.
Gloria reported that the Ziegels Union Church yard sale and netted our snack pack program a check for $1,671. She also has received money from Jordan Lutheran Church who have pledged $100 each month for a year.
Sunday June 7th is our day to help at the Miracle League baseball game. Some Interact students will be there to help too. We need volunteers.
The AWRC annual Changeover this year will be a dinner event here at LCCC in this same room. The date is Thursday June 25th. There will be no other meetings of AWRC that week. More detail will follow.
Five AW Rotarians attended the May 16th District Training Assembly in Blue Bell.
Sarah Andrew is the scheduled Greeter for May 27th. Our Speaker will be U.S. Representative Charlie Dent.
LUCK of the DRAW & FINES did not take place today.
HAPPY DOLLARS: were not solicited today, BUT your ace reporter has been told that Herb Klotz last weekend placed FIRST in the age 50+ group in a 5K race. Way to go, Herb.
PROGRAM:
Our program today was our annual awarding of $1,000 Scholarships to two students from each of four area schools, Northwestern Lehigh, Parkland, LCTI and LCCC. And this year we added one $500 scholarship funded by the Alpine Education Foundation.
Rotarian Hope Pearson, the Northwestern Lehigh Interact club Advisor conducted these awards. The General Manager of Amazon LV was introduced. AW member Scott Hock arranged for a Kindle to be donated to each scholarship recipient. Thank you Amazon.
Hope explained that this year we had our AW committee screen the applications, so that we could seek out students that worked in community service as well as had a need and did well academically. There were 52 applicants that produced the 9 recipients. It was a tough assignment with so many great students. Barb had the committee stand and be recognized.
Hope had the two winners of $1,000 each come forward with their school advisors, starting with LCCC. Then it was LCTI, Northwestern and Parkland. Each winner expressed thanks to AW Rotarians and told some of their future plans. There was much applause and much picture taking.

Parkland-Kristen Tauber (University of Delaware) and Bryan Sobczak (Alvernia University)
Recently we worked with the Alpine Education Foundation which is funded anonymously. With their support we awarded a $500 check to Caleb Wade from Parkland who will be attending Virginia Tech.
CLOSING:
Barb hit the right note to start us singing a good rendition of “God Bless America” This was followed by the recitation of the Pledge to the Flag of the United States and then the saying “One profits most who serves the best.”
