MEMBERSHIP  IS  EVERY  MEMBER'S  BUSINESS

Each of us should seek out good candidates for our Rotary Club. Ask them to breakfast or to our Thursday evening meeting.

___________

Excuse me, do you have her email?

Yes! And so do you!      If you are a member of Allentown West Rotary, you have a ClubRunner (CR) account, and your phone number and e-mail address are in CR.

Need to contact a member for any reason? Download the ClubRunner app – it’s free, of course – and sign in! If you don’t know your password and login information, call Bill Palmer, and he will walk you through the process.  Why Bill? Because everyone knows how to get in touch with him! (Hint: just reply to this newsletter!)

Why would I want to use ClubRunner?

ClubRunner helps to organize us as a club. It is the platform for all our communications, and offers members an opportunity to stay in touch on various levels.

Here are just some reasons people use CR:
  • To call a member on club business, such as to get a ride to a meeting, find out the logistics of an event, or ask for help in getting club business done.
  • To make plans for a social gathering.
  • To check on their birthday so you could send a card. Or their address, same reason.
  • To check on their address before you head over to their house for an event, meeting, or to drop something off.
  • To find their email or phone number. Or work address.
  • Because you’ve forgotten the name of their spouse and you were up all night trying to remember it.
  • Find out the proper spelling of a member’s name.

What’s your best use of Club Runner?

THURSDAY EVENING MIXER
THANKS FOR BEING A ROTARIAN

Twenty-one AW Rotarians and two guests attended the Evening Meeting—Thank You Rotarians theme planned by the membership team. It was Nov. 14, 2019 and was held at Chris’ Family Restaurant in Kuhnsville

The meeting began with delicious appetizers and a cash bar in the basement meeting room.  Amir Famili opened the formal meeting with a welcome to the overflow crowd and guests emphasizing the many service projects our club has undertaken.

Jean Machamer reminded the group of the Holiday Party on Dec. 6.  Barbara Kistler  announced that the Dec. 12 Evening Meeting will be held back at the Holiday Inn starting at 5:30 PM in the Pub.

Gwenn Carr acknowledged all present who have worked on service projects in the past month.

Barbara Kistler was named Rotarian of the month for spending the night before surgery serving at the Miracle League Trick or Treat.

Herb Klotz, our Foundation Chair, provided very helpful information about how much we have received in the past five years or so from The Rotary Foundation to fund our local and global efforts.  With the awarding of this year’s $50,000 global grant we need, as a club, to make sure we meet our Foundation giving goals as well as solicit help from other clubs.
This Rotary year instead of our matching program we have budgeted $25 per member to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund so the EREY will be 100% this year.

The message is “give generously” by “Rotary Direct,”, a single donation online or by check.

The evening concluded with lots of fun playing Bingo with multiple winners.  Gary’ Englehardt’s newest vocation is Bingo calling.  Both Barbara Kistler and Dottie Bloom provided some snacks that went into our 17 prize bags.  Prizes were awarded to our Bingo winners.

John Scott concluded the meeting with us reciting of our motto.

HERE IS A ROTARY FUN FACT

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days.  The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engrave who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion.  The wheel was said to illustrate “Civilization and Movement”.  Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads.

Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians.  In 1923 the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the “Rotary International Association”.  A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft.  So, in 1923 the keyway was added and design which we now know was formally adopted at the official Rotary International emblem.

Meeting, Notes – November 20, 2019

Our Greeter today was Dennis Houser and he did a marvelous job.

President Amir Famili rang the bell at 7:30 A.M. to open the meeting and welcomed all. Then  Chuck Ehninger gave a very nice invocation  including a special mention for Ronnee Klotz, and Bill Weber.

Secretary John Scott  began the meeting having the members recite The Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag. Then he led us in reciting the Four Way Test. And John reviewed some of the upcoming events. John had our two guests introduce themselves and say a few words.

LAST WEEK’S MEETING:
Pres. Amir  told us that our morning meeting last Wednesday at LCTI was great.

ROTARY FUN FACT:
The history of the Rotary Wheel logo is described. See separate article. Gwenn is planning more fun facts for us.

SPECIAL ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AWARD:
DG Herb Klotz presented an RI citation to Past President Jeanne Shipe for the AWRC generous support for PolioPlus during the2018-19 year.

PROGRAM:
Pres. Amir introduced DG Herb Klotz to conduct a Rotary Foundation Conversation.

Herb said his talk today was as our AWRC Foundation Chair. And he admitted that he was using some slides he got from RI TRF Trustee, Julia Phelps, who spoke at the Nov 2nd Foundation Seminar.

OUR Rotary Foundation exists to do good in the world. The Charity Navigator gives OUR TRF a four star rating  --  its highest  --  for the last 12 consecutive years. OUR Foundation actually falls into the top 1 % in the world for its efficiency and overall performance.

It is important that we understand that TRF truly is “OUR” Foundation. The monies going in are donated by Rotarians and friends. And it always is Rotarians that plan and spend those monies. We gave away $300 Million last year.

Herb explained that TRF has three significant Funds to which donations go. They are The Annual Fund-Share, PolioPlus and the Endowment Fund. The Annual Fund is the one that ends up returning HALF of the donated funds back to the District as “DDF (District Designated Funds.) These DDF allow us to fund both local District Grants and broader Global Grants.

A qualified Grant must fall into one of the Six Areas of Focus:
         •Peace and conflict prevention/resolution.
         •Disease prevention and treatment.
         •Water and sanitation.
         •Maternal and child health.
         •Basic education and literacy.
         •Economic and community development.

A District Grant is less than $30,000 total and the RC usually puts in half of its total cost. And they can be used internationally. Our great Snack Pack program started with a small District Grant.

A Global Grant is $30,000 or more and usually involves another country. No RC funds are required, but sponsoring RCs are expected to donate to The Annual Fund each year, AND get other district RCs to also donate. That way the funds get replaced and the programs keep going. Our current $50,000 GG is for the Matru Hospital in Sierra Leone.

Herb distributed a list of both DGs and GGs that AW Rotarians have made happen. It covers 5 years starting in 2013-14. Our RC received $27,500 for District Grants, and led the way for $80,000 of Global Grants. AW Rotarians giving history to the Annual Fund is about $10,000 to $15,000 each year.

Herb also distributed a sheet describing the four ways to donate to the Annual Fund. He discussed each.

Herb really likes Rotary Direct. You go on line and sign up once and have money  --  minimum $10  --  automatically transferred from your credit card or bank account each month, or quarter, or just once each year.

A second way is to just go on line and make a donation.

Another way is to just write a check and give it to Treasurer Chris Blechschmidt.
And a fourth way involves bank transfers.

Herb described two kinds of TRF recognitions. One is a PHF or Paul Harris Fellow. Any time you reach $1,000 in cash and/or recognition Points, you will receive a PHF. Currently. AWRC has 31 members that have a PHF at some level.

Another recognition is to join the PHS  --  the Paul Harris Society. This has you donating at least $1,000 each year, as long as you are financially able. Dennis Houser joined the PHS after hearing Herb’s talk last week.

Herb said that this year we will use Recognition points as matches to cash as an incentive for members to donate. And the AW b.o.d. has approved the club donating $25 for each member probably in January. This allows us to have 100 % participation in E.R.E.Y.  – Every Member Every Year.

CLOSING:
Pres. Amir closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
