The Impact of COVID-19 on the Emotional Wellbeing of "School-Aged" Children in the Lehigh Valley

Presentation Summary

The sense of structure and stimulation normally afforded to children by going to school in the Lehigh Valley have been greatly disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  And because of this, children are experiencing less opportunity to be with their friends to get the social support that is essential for their mental and emotional well being.  This new disruption in our educational structure can have far-reaching implications on our children's emotional well-being.

  • What are the best practice approaches to adopt in order to remain educationally functional during a pandemic?
  • How can our schools and local government get better at anticipating the unmet emotional needs of school-aged children?

During this presentation, State Representative Michael Schlossberg will discuss:

  • The psychological effects that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of our children within the Lehigh Valley.
  • What Pennsylvania State and Local Governments are doing to address these real challenges.
  • What the average person within the local community can do to better support school-aged children during COVID-19.

Valley Youth House: Serving Vulnerable Youth & Families in our Region
Vision:
Valley Youth House envisions a world in which every young person belongs to a nurturing community.

Overview:

Valley Youth House began in 1973 as a single youth shelter in Bethlehem, PA. VYH was open day and night, ensuring that vulnerable, abused and homeless young people in the community had access to shelter and counseling. Even then, we represented more than just a roof and beds. We were an organization committed to building a solid foundation for every youth who came through our doors.

That same dedication still drives us today, as we have grown from that first shelter in the Lehigh Valley to over 300 residential facilities throughout 20 counties in Pennsylvania. While our reach and programming have vastly expanded to include street outreach, housing, counseling, skills training, health, prevention, and intervention services, our mission remains the same: to be the catalyst for youth to achieve their desired future through genuine relationships that support families, ensure safe places, and build community connections.

Summary:

Children who are born in a very economically challenged situation can indeed make it in this world.  They can truly achieve their life's dreams even if they are not a superstar basketball player.  Yes, they can still achieve their goals.  Julio believes that children can achieve their goals without selling drugs or harming others within their community in order to have their dreams come true.

In this presentation, Julio describes his life's journey as a young boy growing up to become a man of considerable influence in the City of Allentown where he has served on the City Council for 20 years.  Julio's life's dream and passion is to inspire the disadvantaged child to excellence through hard work and education.
