the EWB annual fundraiser at DeSales University has been rescheduled for August.
SNACK PACKING:
Chair Gail Micca reports that on Wednesday March 18 that AW Rotarians, Lori Peters and Gail Micca and faculty from Parkland assembled snack packs. 255 snack packs were assembled, 75 by Gail, 180 by the Parkland staff.
The students acquired snack packs through a drive-by service that was administered by the school. This past Wednesday, they handed out all of the packs that the district had made, but the Rotary snack packs were not given out yet. They will do another drive-by pick up this Wednesday again. And then probably every two weeks thereafter. So they have 255 packs ready to go from us.
Gail will be packing the next 240 packs there and dropping them off to Parkland C.A.R.E.S. next week for an April 1st drive-by delivery.
Since Gail is isolating, she will not be asking for help except from her family. After that, we will regroup to see what is most feasible from then on.
Katrina Sundstrom has suggested moving to gift cards for families. Obviously our budget won’t cover a lot for that, but we can discuss whether we would like to contribute the $500 in our budget each month for the remainder of the year, but we don’t know the future yet.
Snack contents are similar to previous packs, but the next one will contain more canned goods (cans of salmon, evaporated milk and applesauce). We had been avoiding heavy cans for the kids, but with the pickup service, we can get more food to them with the cans.
LOHILL FOOD PANTRY ADJUSTS:
The Lohill Food Pantry volunteers are working on prepacking the food items and handing it out to clients instead of letting the folks come into the building.
THURSDAY EVENING SCHEDULE:
No meetings for Thursday evening are scheduled yet.
NEXT MORNING MEETING:
Starting at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday April 1st we will use Zoom to meet together.
MEMBER NEWS:
Wendy Weaver reports from the Villages in Florida:
“Here I am sitting in beautiful Florida. Not a cloud in the bright blue sky. A flock of pelicans just flew over and the ibis are pecking around for food in the neighbors front yard. It is 85 degrees.
“About the only thing working here is my rocking chair on the front porch. We are essentially locked down except for the golf courses (only 1 person in the cart!) and restaurants that offer take out.
“The Villages is located within three different Counties. Current figures of Corona virus positive testings total 21 in all three. Nothing newly published regarding number of those who are Villages residents.
“Governor DeSantis was here this weekend to open our drive thru testing center(s) on our polo grounds. There is little activity of the virus that we know of - only 1 person living in the Villages. No doubt these numbers will go up somewhat with the testing.
“Of course, there are those panicking people who clear out our grocery shelves (of course, toilet paper!) as soon as they are stocked. Few eggs, meat, milk - but plenty of fresh produce. That both irritates and makes me sad that the salty canned things are being purchased instead.
“My love to you guys - I read the newsletter religiously thanks to Bill. I will hopefully see you in June!!"
Al Lewis reports on things at Luther Crest:
“To my knowledge no active virus cases as of yet!! We all go to bring our meals back to our apartments.
“Most everything has been cancelled (excess, games discussions etc) Everyone entering LC must have their temperature taken and enter the front door.
“Children and visitors can leave food at Awning Doors for residents to pick up. Residents can come and go but are advised steps to take, e.g. washing hands 20 sec, disinfect everything if possible with clorox etc. and walk 6 feet away from each other.
Al has helped the nurses. The Cleaning people etc must have temperatures taken at the front door before entering.
ROTARIANS CONNECTING:
Gail Micca has written an e-nail to all AW members:
“I am writing to invite you to connect with other Rotarians during this trying time.
“There may be members in our club who could use a friendly phone call and a chat to lift their spirits. I recently made some phone calls because I was trying to confirm the details on our new name tags and I really enjoyed the conversations with members, especially one of our newer members, David Haight.
“Let's use this time to find a new friend in our club. Please take a moment today or tomorrow to make a phone call (or two or three) to someone in our club who you don't know very well.
“If you have never used club runner and you don't know how to connect with other club members, please let me know. I would be happy to share phone numbers with you.
“As we work on ways to do our meetings online and until we meet again, keep the Rotary spirit alive and have some fun conversations :)
“Let me know what you think of this idea. I hope to hear from you.
