PROGRAM:
Our program today was Fred Buse, Master Gardener talking about A Day in the Spring. Fred is a retired Marine Engineer and Ingersoll-Rand retired employee. Fred has spent his last 50 years growing trees, shrubs, flowers , etc. in his back yard.
Fred showed us a photo of his current back yard that includes a 15 ft. x 10 ft. x 3 ft. deep fish pond. He also has many bird feeders at various heights and with many protections against squirrels.
Fred noted that a recent hurricane destroyed much of the calcium bearing foods for many birds. So he and others now put out crushed egg shells as a food supplement.
Fred said this Spring was a bit warm and came early. And the birds came early as well.
Fred showed us a photo of his back yard and then of his flowers, frogs, birds, ducks, and other visitors. He said that his flowers come in bloom in a set sequence every year.
Fred’s yard has 13 types of daffodils. BTW birds like split peanuts, as do other animals. Birds when they migrate follow the stars. And they have the ability to be influenced by the earth’s magnetic field.
Fred said some birds travel over 3,000 miles to migrate. He said that the migration line in recent years has moved about 500 miles farther north. Some birds now are staying around right through the Winter. And recently there seems to be a lot of foxes around.
By the way, birds sleep on branches by having their feet lock onto a branch.
Fred took some questions. And he has offered to have any of us tour his gardens.
CLOSING:
Pres. Jeanne closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
