PROGRAM:
Pres. Amir introduced Dr. Jim Eliker, Adj Lecturer Alvernia University discussing Servant Leadership.
Jim served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1974-1981 including shipboard duty on a US destroyer and then as part of the staff at the US Naval Academy. He then served as a Human Resources professional at Air Products and Chemicals from 1981-2009, including supporting brilliant clients like Dr. Amir Famili in Performance Chemicals. Jim retired from Air Products and served as a senior HR generalist with Lutron Electronics from 2009-2015.
After retiring from industry, Jim has continued career and leadership coaching and pursued doctoral studies in leadership at Alvernia University in Reading, Pa. Jim took his undergraduate in mathematics at Miami University of Ohio, his masters at Gonzaga University in organizational leadership, and just completed his doctorate at Alvernia last month.
His graduate studies have focused on the concept of servant leadership within organizations. Jim has also taught several business classes at Alvernia University and written over 150 educational songs for the Word of the Week program in the Reading area. Jim serves as an ordained Greek Orthodox Deacon at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Reading, Pa.
Jim said that Amir and he have been good friends since the Air Products days. He said he is honored to be with us today.
Jim has studied the subject of “Servant Leadership” for 10 years. He did his research with a Hotel whose staff has used these principles and are doing very well.
Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.” -Robert K. Greenleaf. While servant leadership is a timeless concept, the phrase “servant leadership” was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf.
It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first”. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: do those served grow as persons?
The approach encourages employees to grow while keeping the long term in view. Jim’s Hotel studied is flourishing. When any person comes to their door that person is treated with sincere conversation and special treatment.
Jim says that this approach creates a workplace of happiness (joy). They are putting people above profit.
CLOSING:
Pres. Amir led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best."
