Our Greeter today was Geoff Legg, who greeted us all as a group after the bell rang.
President Jeanne Shipe rang the bell at 7:30 A.M. to open the meeting. Jeanne did a very nice moment of silence and a prayer.
Pres. Jeanne began the meeting having the members recite the 4 way test followed by Bob Gordon’s 5 Way Test, Then we recited the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. Flag.

On Saturday, October 20th there is an RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) training session at DeSales University. AWRC members will have their registration fees reimbursed after they attend. This is a great opportunity to learn all about Rotary.

PURPLE PINKIE IS COMING:
October 13th at LCCC is the date for the 5K run and Fun walk to raise funds to eradicate the last few cases of Polio from the world.
Our RI Foundation Chair, Barb Kistler reviewed the 4 areas of need to make this AWRC event successful for our District again this year:
1. Participants to run or walk should sign up on Herb’s list, or go to purplepinkie.net to register.
2. If some members will not Run or Walk, please volunteer to help control car traffic, race directions, food distribution, or registration on site. Randy Beitler is the contact.
3. Make pledges to sponsor folks who will be racing.
4. Donate gift cards which are a highlight of the event that we raffle off at the end. Jennifer Stinson is the contact.
Pres. Jeanne reminds us that she and her dog Daisy will be participating and asks us all to sponsor her -- or Daisy.
NEW AWRC PROJECT:
The Band Shell we helped pay for years ago at Ontelaunee Park is in need of repairs. Bob Nagle is putting together a list of supplies needed.

DISTRICT 7430 GOVERNOR NOMINATIONS ARE OPEN:
All RCs now may nominate a candidate to serve as our District Governor for the Rotary Year 2021-22. Contact President Jeanne Shipe to make a nomination.
NEW AWRC BANNER DESIGN SOUGHT:
Pres. Jeanne is asking for suggestions for a new banner design. The best 3 will be reviewed by the board. Then the club members pick the winner.

TT5 RESTAUARANT UPDATE:
Gwenn Carr listed the four already signed up, and the 9 others they are working on. Please help where you can.
TT 5 COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED:
Gary Englehardt reminds us that TT5 will happen on April 28, 2019, but Now is the time to volunteer to work with Gwenn and Gary to learn and execute the many jobs associated with this great fundraising event.
HOLIDAY INN STATUS:
Gwenn Carr said that the H.I. has been sold and will be a “Delta” Inn for Marriott. The Inn will be refurbished over the next 1-1/2 to 2 years, with the Conference Center towards the end. The Management team will stay in place.
THE NEXT THURSDAY EVENING MEETING will be September 27th at 5:30 P.M. at the Holiday Inn in Breinigsville.
Pres. Jeanne confirmed that there is an approved District Grant of $1,000 to fund the shelves and bins for the Threads of Change group.
DICTIONARY PROJECT:
P-E Amir Famili has launched this year’s project and ordered about 1,000 dictionaries to arrive in a few weeks. Cash donations are welcome. And there will be a “Label Pasting” Party at Amir’s home on October 26th.
AREA 1 FOUNDATION AREA COORDINATOR:
Bill Erdman of the Emmaus RC is the newly appointed Area 1 FAC. He is scheduled as our program for October 10th. Pres. Jeanne reminds us the November is Foundation month in the Rotary world.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION:
Shawn Fejes, sponsored by Bob Gordon, was inducted into AWRC as an Active member this morning. Dr. Bob Gordon conducted the ceremony. WELCOME, SHAWN.
Pres Jeanne introduced S-a-A Mitch Huston who conducted the drawings and picked up the Happy Dollars.
The door prize breakfast was donated by Geoff Legg, and it was won by Len Salines.
The 50:50 pot of $71 was not won .by Jeff Kistler whose ticket was drawn. ONLY 5 marbles remain…..and one is Black.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Bill Palmer is happy to compare the 365,000 new cases of Polio world=wide in 1986 to the YTD number of 17 in 2018 in just 2 countries.
Alicia Orbin is happy to have been on the recent Friendship Exchange trip to England. It was great……..and so was the whiskey.
Bill Erdman is happy to be here at AWRC today.
Dan Crane had his photo in the paper as he celebrated the 96th birthday of his former H.S. football coach.
Dan also recommends that we all sign up for the TT5 committee.
It was noted that Sue Weber was quiet again this day.
PROGRAM:
Pres. Jeanne introduced our friend Jim Palmquist, a member of the Emmaus RC. Jim has spoken to us a few times before. He is a former Navy Helicopter pilot, for example.
Jim noted that he has been on a Friendship Exchange and highly recommends the experience to all. He also led a Group Study Exchange (GSE) team to Japan in 1995.
Jim discussed the recent article in The Rotarian magazine on using a public health model to reduce violence. He will send a copy to you if you send him your e-mail address.
There is a group in the Emmaus Rotary club that has discussed this article and are looking at applying those ideas and other ideas they have found, possibly in Emmaus and/or Allentown.

Jim showed to us a great video about Rotary’s position in the world poised to promote things like education and water and sanitation work that all lead to peace.
Why is now a good time for Rotary to engage here? The End of war in this century is possible!

Jim says that he now is working on:
A peacebuilding project every year at Emmaus RC.
Met with Rotary Action Group for Peace leaders in Portland in 2016.
Met with Operations Facilitator who works with Mediators Beyond Borders/Rotary in LA in 2017.
Attended mediation training in 2018 in Los Angeles with Mediators Beyond Borders founder.
Giving talks at Rotary Clubs like Allentown West.
