Excuse me, do you have her email?

Yes! And so do you!      If you are a member of Allentown West Rotary, you have a ClubRunner (CR) account, and your phone number and e-mail address are in CR.

Need to contact a member for any reason? Download the ClubRunner app – it’s free, of course – and sign in! If you don’t know your password and login information, call Bill Palmer, and he will walk you through the process.  Why Bill? Because everyone knows how to get in touch with him! (Hint: just reply to this newsletter!)

Why would I want to use ClubRunner?

ClubRunner helps to organize us as a club. It is the platform for all our communications, and offers members an opportunity to stay in touch on various levels.

Here are just some reasons people use CR:
  • To call a member on club business, such as to get a ride to a meeting, find out the logistics of an event, or ask for help in getting club business done.
  • To make plans for a social gathering.
  • To check on their birthday so you could send a card. Or their address, same reason.
  • To check on their address before you head over to their house for an event, meeting, or to drop something off.
  • To find their email or phone number. Or work address.
  • Because you’ve forgotten the name of their spouse and you were up all night trying to remember it.
  • Find out the proper spelling of a member’s name.

What’s your best use of Club Runner?

         QUOTE of the WEEK --

“Give freely to the world these gifts of love and compassion. Do not concern yourself with how much you receive in return, just know in your heart it will be returned.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 23rd, The Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley held its annual Trick or Treat night for approximately 200 children all dressed up in their Halloween costumes.

Allentown West Rotary was represented by Jeff and Barbara Kistler, President Amir Famili, Gail Micca and Jean Machamer, along with 7 Northwestern Lehigh Interact Club students.  We give big thanks to all the donors who provided our fruit snacks for the ghosts, goblins, cartoon characters and super heroes.  What a great night it was!

THURSDAY EVE MEETING NOTES

Twelve AW Rotarians met on October 24th at the Holiday Inn. We got our food and drink in the Pub and then gathered in a very nice private Conference room. Dennis Houser greeted us an handled registration.

DG Herb Klotz started the meeting with the group pledging allegiance to the U.S. Flag, and then reciting the Four Way Test. And some Happy Dollars were collected.

Gwenn Carr distributed copies of the Rotary Alphabet Soup. This is a full page list of the many acronyms used in the Rotary world.

Gwenn then awarded Dale Heffner as the Rotarian of the Month. Congratulations, Dale.

Our program was DG Herb who reviewed the special goals we are working towards for this year. He began by showing us a video from his August 2019 DG Newsletter, It was about membership and growing Rotary. Herb explained about ‘Rotary Direct” and “The Paul Harris Society.’ And he described our April 2020 district conference plans.

Herb later told the story of the man in the late 1970s who had the idea to vaccinate every child in the Philippines against Polio. The success of this effort over the following years led to RI making a commitment to eradicate Polio from the free world, later from the entire world.

The latest stats show that both Type 2 and recently type 3 cases are gone. And type 1 cases YTD are 17 in Pakistan, and 76 in Afghanistan.

President Amir, using some photos, told us of recent AWRC completed projects. First he told of the Snack Packing at Parkland with 14 Interact students helping on Oct 16.   Next was the Oct 23 Miracle League Halloween party where AWRC had a booth and handed out treats to the children. There were costumes and lots of fun.

Amir noted that the club members donated $1800 toward the purchase of 1100 dictionaries for 3rd-graders. The label application will be this Sunday at Amir’s house.  Then he thanked the volunteers led by Gail Micca and Dale Heffner who worked the new Adopt-a-Highway project last Saturday that yielded 26 bags of  trash in just over 2 hours.

We closed the meeting with saying the motto, “One profits most who serves best.”

JOSEPH  PLEBAN
Rotary Student of the Month, October, 2019

Joseph Pleban, a Senior at Northwestern Lehigh High School, was honored as our Allentown West Rotary Club Student-of-the-Month at the destination meeting held at the Northwestern Middle School on October 30.

Joseph was nominated by Northwestern because through Student Council he was the catalyst, planner and organizer for “Hoops for Hope”, a basketball event which raised $4,500 last February for local students / families that are dealing with cancer.  This exemplary act of service has had a great impact on students, teachers and community families.

Besides Student Council Joseph is a member of Northwestern Interact Club and is a runner on the Cross Country and Track teams.  This winter he will play varsity basketball.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society at Northwestern.

Outside of school Joseph works part-time at Weis Markets.
His future plans are to go to college and become an actuary.  A summer camp at Lebanon Valley College encouraged his interest in this vocational direction.

For the award recognition Joseph was joined  by his parents, Bill and Lynn Pleban and by Patty Mengel, Student Council Advisor and teacher.  Joseph also has a twin sister, Emily.

As Rotarians it is our pleasure to honor students such as Joseph Pleban who exemplify our Rotary motto, “Service above Self”.

There were no ticket drawings today, and no Happy Dollars.

PROGRAM:
Jean Machamer, Advisor to the NWL Interact Club, began the program by expressing our thanks to the school leaders for supporting the Interact Club and for having this meeting today.

Jean then asked each of the six Northwestern Lehigh Interact students to state their name, class level, and why they are in Interact. They all like being of service.

Jean said that currently there are 10 members who are Seniors this school year, and four in lower classes. Thus there is a membership effort underway.

The Interact students have a goal each year to raise at least $1,000 so that they can purchase a ShelterBox. The ShelterBox includes a sturdy tent that holds ten people. And inside there are tools, a stove, water purification tablets, blankets, for example.

Right now the students are taking orders for Krispy Kreme donuts to be delivered around Nov. 11th. A sign-up sheet was circulated and it got a lot of attention.

The students helped out at the Oct 23 Miracle League Halloween Party which was a lot of fun. As the year progresses the students will do a Christmas project and end up with their annual floor hockey tournament. Jean said that they are looking for more projects to support.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH:
Joseph Pleban was selected as the AWRC Student of the Month for October. Rev. Jeff Kistler made the award which includes a gift card for Amazon items. See separate article.
