PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Dr. David Ehrenkrantz, Pres Rotary NE Sunrisers PHL AND Jean Romulus, Executive Director of the Health Education Action League for Haiti (H.E.A.L. Haiti) AND PDG Bob Lankin, District 7450 Governor (2005-06), to discuss the Vocational Training Team (VTT) Mission Trip to Pignon, Haiti. Jean Romulus is the founder and board member of “HEAL Haiti.”
The Rotary Club of Pignon, Haiti will be hosting a group of nursing professionals from Queens, NY, whose leadership includes two graduate level nurse educators from NYU and Pace University, along with a program administrator who will be arriving at Pignon, Haiti on a mission to augment nursing services on that northern part of the island. They'll be working with local nursing teams at Pignon Hospital to help them improve patient care by training them on the new innovations and best practices of nursing.
Dr. David Ehrenkrantz has spent his entire professional career serving the interests of the population with developmental/intellectual disabilities, and their normalization. He acquired his Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, where he did his dissertation on Down syndrome. His Masters in Public Health was taken at New York Medical College, with a concentration in developmental disabilities. Postdoctorally, he served as the Disabilities Epidemiologist for the State of Kansas and the Senior Maternal and Child Health Epidemiologist for the state of Maine. Both positions focused on physical as well as developmental/intellectual disabilities for individuals of all ages, and their integration/reintegration into society.
Currently, David serves as the Global Group Leader for RESULTS Philadelphia, as well as the Chair of the Advocacy Committee for Partners in Health Engage Philadelphia (both local chapters of international health and poverty organizations). He has successfully been advocating Congress for sustained funding to ensure continued delivery of health and educational services to developing nations. He has also been training highly motivated medical students from Penn and Jefferson to develop effective advocacy skills. David sits on the Board of Directors for the World Conference of Mayors, as well as the Rotary Club of Northeast Sunrisers Philadelphia, where he serves as the Rotary Foundation Chair.
This VTT project is being funded by a Rotary Global Grant of $30,000. Ri approved this just last week. This grant requires the lead RC to put up $10,000 and right now they are $4,000 short. These men are going around Districts 7430 and 7450 telling the story and seeing financial support.
Donations can go to the N.E. Sunrisers RC and stay in escrow. Then funds will go to TRF with credit given to the donor and their RC.
The original plan was to make the two week training trip in January. But now it looks as if it will happen in March.
Bob Lankin reminded us of the 2010 earthquake of 7 power that was centered in the capital of Haiti. It killed 100,000, injured 300,000 and left One Million homeless. They are still trying to recover. And more VTTs to Haiti will follow as funds are generated.
CLOSING:
Pres Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
