Allentown West Rotary Club
Zoom  Meeting October 7, 2020

Today was a Zoom meeting with about 30 people on line. After some conversations President Ralph Witcher opened the meeting at 7:30 A.M.  Pres. Ralph gave a very nice invocation.

GUESTS ON LINE:
Capt. Nick Millward. Peace Fellowship candidate calling from Japan. Pat and Brittany Witcher; Kathi Ott, almost a member; Ellie Jacobs, guest of Gail Micca;

Pres Ralph began the meeting by leading us in the Pledge of allegiance  to the Flag of the U.S. . Then Ralph  asked Marlene Heller to give the 4 Way Test example.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST EXAMPLE:
Marlene asked for a volunteer or two to tell a story indicative of their application of ethical standards recently.

Marlene told us how she introduced the 4 Way Test questions to an Administrative Board who was concerned with a member’s behavior. Once the members discussed the test, they decided to drop the offending member without hesitation.

Pres. Ralph expressed great admiration for Gail Micca as she does so many things with the club that provides service to others.

Pres. Ralph displayed the list of October members and their celebration dates.  Congratulations went to Halyna and Mike Stegura for their 46th wedding anniversary.

WHAT ROTARY MEANS TO ME:
Halyna Stegura endorsed the Rotary concept of serving others. She noted that Christina started her service in The Peace Corps. Kate is a Pharmacist who teaches others. Mike Jr. Runs multiple races to raise money for Philadelphia charities. And daughter, Mary, while on covid19 layoff from Orlando’s DisneyWorld became a caregiver for a friend.

NEW GRANT:
Gail Micca is waiting to hear about her application for a $1,000 grant that we will donate to Meals on Wheels.

VALLEY YOUTH HOUSE:
Please note this picture. We request our Club members and friends  donate good quality clean luggage to the Valley Youth House.

When Gail Micca delivered luggage this last week, they had just run out of luggage. Most of these pieces were 2-3 piece sets, so there were about 10 pieces of luggage donated.  They need more!
Donations can be dropped off directly to VYH or Gail will accept donations and take them for you.

THE “LOOK BOOK” FUNDRAISER:
Gwenn Carr reports that 26 donors have sent in pictures, and $825 have been raised for the Lowhill Food Pantry. Donors  received a pdf  copy.
Gwenn Carr expresses Special thanks to Barbara Kistler for writing the short history of the Lowhill Food Pantry included in the booklet.

Also thanks go to EBC Printing for designing the cover.

AW’S GARDEN:
Here’s a recent picture of the garden.  We have lettuce, pak choy, kale, peppers and tomatoes growing.  We will also have cabbage in November.

If anyone would like to help with bagging produce on Friday, Oct 9th, please let Gail know!

ANOTHER IDEA:
Nick Millward suggests that we start a Book Club. There will be more info coming.

AWRC 2020 CHRISTMAS PARTY, a.k.a. HOLIDAY PICNIC:
Amir Famili said that our outdoor Face-to-Face event is on Saturday October 17. The plan is to bring food to the Upper Macungie Park  --  off of Route 100 in Fogelsville. We start at NOON and go at least to 4 P.M. Sunday Oct 18th is the “rain date.” The cost is $10 pp to cover expenses. Amir e-mailed a flyer.

PLEASE E-MAIL JEAN MACHAMER IF YOU WILL ATTEND, AND TELL HER WHAT FOOD OR DRINK ITEMS YOU WILL BRING.

PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Julio A. Guridy, Allentown Council Vice President, re Creating the American Dream. Julio holds BS and MS degree. He is married and has 3 children.

Children who are born in a very economically challenged situation can indeed make it in this world.  They can truly achieve their life's dreams even if they are not a superstar basketball player.  Yes, they can still achieve their goals.  Julio believes that children can achieve their goals without selling drugs or harming others within their community in order to have their dreams come true.

Julio described his life's journey as a young boy growing up to become a man of considerable influence in the City of Allentown where he has served on the City Council for 20 years.  Julio's life's dream and passion is to inspire the disadvantaged child to excellence through hard work and education.

Julio was born in the Dominican Republic with Spanish as his native language. When very young he lived on his grandfather’s farm where they went to a creek for fresh water, had no indoor plumbing and no electricity. They lived on the food that they grew.

Julio’s Mother moved to Puerto Rico and when he was 14 he was reunited with her. When he was 15 five of them migrated from Puerto Rico and went to Bethlehem, PA. They moved into a one room apartment with 4 other relatives until they found a place in the Housing Projects..

They finally had electricity and indoor plumbing. He now has been in the U.S.A. for almost 40 years, and speaks English well. He went to Freedom H.S. in Bethlehem and then to college. He worked as a Janitor while in high school.

His parents moved to Florida when he was a sophomore in college. After college he got a job as a case worker and he also did volunteer work. At one time he was a Rotarian in the Liberty Bell RC. He also worked in the Banking world for a time. At one point they had a Travel Agency and did a lot of traveling themselves.

Julio encourages youth to do the right thing, and have a big heart. He hopes to develop a Youth Advocacy Group in Allentown.

CLOSING:
Pres Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
