PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Julio A. Guridy, Allentown Council Vice President, re Creating the American Dream. Julio holds BS and MS degree. He is married and has 3 children.
Children who are born in a very economically challenged situation can indeed make it in this world. They can truly achieve their life's dreams even if they are not a superstar basketball player. Yes, they can still achieve their goals. Julio believes that children can achieve their goals without selling drugs or harming others within their community in order to have their dreams come true.
Julio described his life's journey as a young boy growing up to become a man of considerable influence in the City of Allentown where he has served on the City Council for 20 years. Julio's life's dream and passion is to inspire the disadvantaged child to excellence through hard work and education.
Julio was born in the Dominican Republic with Spanish as his native language. When very young he lived on his grandfather’s farm where they went to a creek for fresh water, had no indoor plumbing and no electricity. They lived on the food that they grew.
Julio’s Mother moved to Puerto Rico and when he was 14 he was reunited with her. When he was 15 five of them migrated from Puerto Rico and went to Bethlehem, PA. They moved into a one room apartment with 4 other relatives until they found a place in the Housing Projects..
They finally had electricity and indoor plumbing. He now has been in the U.S.A. for almost 40 years, and speaks English well. He went to Freedom H.S. in Bethlehem and then to college. He worked as a Janitor while in high school.
His parents moved to Florida when he was a sophomore in college. After college he got a job as a case worker and he also did volunteer work. At one time he was a Rotarian in the Liberty Bell RC. He also worked in the Banking world for a time. At one point they had a Travel Agency and did a lot of traveling themselves.
Julio encourages youth to do the right thing, and have a big heart. He hopes to develop a Youth Advocacy Group in Allentown.
CLOSING:
Pres Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
