Our Greeter today was Dan Crane, and he did a marvelous job.
President Amir Famili rang the bell at 7:30 A.M. to open the meeting and welcomed all. Then Ralph Witcher gave a very nice invocation including a special mention for Ronnee Klotz and for Barbara Kistler. Also remembered is Dale Utt who passed away last week..
P-E Ralph Witcher began the meeting having the members recite The Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag. Then he led us in reciting the Four Way Test.
GUESTS:
Patricia Witcher, wife of Ralph.
DICTIONARIES:
Pres. Amir has them in his Garage and needs volunteers to put the labels in place.
Thanks to all who donated their funds.
Please tell Amir if you wish to help distribute them.
SNACK PACKING AT PARKLAND:
There was a very successful work group last Wednesday that included 14 Interact students.
ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY:
Saturday October 19th at 8:00 a.m. this new project was taken on successfully by AW volunteers, See separate article.
DINING OUT IN OCTOBER:
Jean Machamer says Dining Out for October will be at Stony Run Inn on Thursday, October 31st, at 6:00 PM. Put your costumes on and come on out for a howling, fun-filled evening! 🎃 Hope to see you there! !
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Dottie Bloom asks for volunteers to help deliver meals on Veterans Day Nov. 11th, as we do each year. “New” volunteers will have to fill out some forms. Prior vols do not.
LOWHILL FOOD PANTRY:
This great group still depends on cash donations from AW Rotarians. And volunteering for the produce pick-up and distribution on Saturday mornings is a very satisfying thing.
THURSDAY EVENING SCHEDULE:
TOMORROW Oct 24 -- at the Holiday Inn at 5:30 P.M. District Governor Herb Klotz will be the program.
NEXT MORNING MEETING = DESTINATION MEETING::
***DO NOT COME TO LUTHER CREST ***
Oct 30 with Andy Drotar as our Greeter. Our meeting will be at the NW Lehigh Middle School Cafeteria with the Interact students.
There will be a Student of the Month award and Interact + Administrators.
MEMBERSHIP INCENTIVE:
Gwenn Carr recognized Ralph Witcher with the promised cash prize for sponsoring Tom Friday, our newest member.
Gwenn also distributed a “Fun Facts” sheet for us. Gwenn then thanked all who served on service projects in Sept. and Oct. by distributing candy.
ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH:
Jean Masiko was recognized by the club as our Rotarian of the month of October. Jean says she came into AWRC in 1992 when we were meeting at the old Starlite Diner. She loves the people of Rotary.
Pres. Amir introduced Sgt.-at-Arms Mitch Huston who conducted the drawings and collected Happy Dollars.
Mitch first drew tickets for two Purple Pinkie Tee Shirts, size Small. Both went to Ralph Witcher.
The door prize bottle of wine donated by Dan Crane was won by Geoff Legg..
The $41 pot of the 50:50 was not won by David Haight’s ticket being drawn followed by a white marble. MANY marbles will be back next week.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Bill Palmer is happy to be celebrating another birthday this Friday.
Halyna Stegura is happy that she and Mike celebrated 45 years of marriage.
Dawn Costello is happy that her granddaughter is happy at Michigan University.
Gail Micca is happy that husband Ed had some cancer removed and is doing well.
Al Lewis is happy that their son had a birthday last Sunday.
Herb Klotz is happy that he is not giving a talk to any RC today.
PROGRAM:
Pres. Amir introduced our speakers for today, Dr. Pritesh Patel and his Senior Technician, Joseph, to explain the ABCs of Composites.
Dr. Patel’s Company is Evonik Corporation where he is the Applied Technology Director.
Pritesh’s current responsibility is to develop new technology for both the Adhesive and Composites markets.
Dr. Patel holds a PhD in “Industrial Polymers” from – INDIA. He then added two years of Post-Doc at the “Georgia Institute of technology” Chemical Engineering Dept., where he worked on the process optimization of various thermoplastic materials via extrusion and injection molding.
He has over 20 years’ of experience in new product development for varieties of polymers. About four years of experience developing nanocomposite formulations. Pritesh has developed 15 plus new products in various end markets.
Dr. Patel thanked us for inviting him here today. Then he began his presentation, Composite 101.
Dr. Patel said that his presentation covers the following issues:
What are Composite material?
Composite history
Why Composite?
Composite fabrication methods
Composite applications
Composite materials are engineered materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties which remain separate and distinct on a macroscopic level within the finished structure”
Wood has cellulose polymer structure and the fibre acts as a reinforcement to provide strength. This leads to:
FRP Fiber reinforcement plastic.
PCM Polymer composite materials
APC Advance polymer composites
GFRP Glass fiber reinforced Plastic
Composite History ---
The earliest synthetic composite materials were straw and mud combined to form bricks for building construction. Concrete is also a composite material, and is used more than any other synthetic material in the world. Plywood; gluing wood at different angles gives better properties than natural wood.
Synthetic: The first artificial fibre reinforced plastic was bakelite which dates to 1907. Fiber example is glassfiber
So why are there Composites? Because:
Light weight More efficient
Corrosion resistance Better durability
Balance performance Low maintenance Mutifunctionality
Composite cost logic ---
High strength of fiber cannot use by itself to make structural part. Low strength of matrix does not use by itself to make usable structure parts. By incorporating both (resin and fiber) one can achieve balance properties.
Composites Fabrication Methods & Applications Main technologies were described by Dr. Patel.
Hand/Wet lay-up
Resin Infusion/VARTM
Resin Transfer Molding
Filament Winding
Prepreg
Pultrusion
Compression Moulding
CIPP (Cured-in-place-pipe)
After Dr. Patel reviewed these applications, he declared that we now know all that we need to know about Composites.
CLOSING:
Pres. Amir closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
