MEMBERSHIP  IS  EVERY  MEMBER'S  BUSINESS

Each of us should seek out good candidates for our Rotary Club. Ask them to breakfast or to our Thursday evening meeting.

___________

Excuse me, do you have her email?

Yes! And so do you!      If you are a member of Allentown West Rotary, you have a ClubRunner (CR) account, and your phone number and e-mail address are in CR.

Need to contact a member for any reason? Download the ClubRunner app – it’s free, of course – and sign in! If you don’t know your password and login information, call Bill Palmer, and he will walk you through the process.  Why Bill? Because everyone knows how to get in touch with him! (Hint: just reply to this newsletter!)

Why would I want to use ClubRunner?

ClubRunner helps to organize us as a club. It is the platform for all our communications, and offers members an opportunity to stay in touch on various levels.

Here are just some reasons people use CR:
  • To call a member on club business, such as to get a ride to a meeting, find out the logistics of an event, or ask for help in getting club business done.
  • To make plans for a social gathering.
  • To check on their birthday so you could send a card. Or their address, same reason.
  • To check on their address before you head over to their house for an event, meeting, or to drop something off.
  • To find their email or phone number. Or work address.
  • Because you’ve forgotten the name of their spouse and you were up all night trying to remember it.
  • Find out the proper spelling of a member’s name.

What’s your best use of Club Runner?

GRACE SMITH
STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Grace Smith, a Senior at Parkland High School, was recognized as Student-of-he-Month at our December 11 Club meeting.  Grace excels academically and as a servant-leader… service and leadership intertwine.

At Parkland she has taken AP Advanced Placement courses in Physics, Calculus I, Language & Composition, and Literature.  Many of her other courses are Honors, including Biomedical Science and Chemistry.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and the ASL American Sign Language Honor Society, their Vice President.

Grace serves as Senior Class President, previously as Class President in her Freshman and Sophomore years.  A National Honor Society officer, she coordinates the Society’s volunteers for Miracle League.  She is a National Honor Society Tutor and serves as PALS- Peer Assisted Learning Support- Secretary.

She was an organizer and speaker at the 2018 Walk Out event which followed the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  Instead of allowing students to exit the building in a disorderly fashion, her fellow class officers and she worked with the administration to set up a walkout day where students could come and grieve and express their concerns about school safety in a safe setting-a vigil for those lives lost in Florida with hundreds of students attending.

Grace has become involved in the Travis Manion Foundation, TMF, which supports veterans and families of fallen vets by helping them discover/affirm their assets and empowering them to share their stories in order to build a culture of character and service.

Grace and her mother are founders and co-directors of the Lehigh Valley 9/11 Run which is related to (and supports) the Travis Manion Foundation as well as local agencies.  This is one of over fifty 9/ll Heroes Runs around the world which give veterans and families of fallen soldiers a way to participate in their communities and inspire others.  Grace also volunteered at the Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run.

Because of her servant leadership Grace is the Travis Manion Foundation Northeast Spartan of the Year for 2019, and this year’s First Lt. Travis Manion and Cpt. Michael Crescent Award recipient.  She also received the Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award from the West Point Society.

At Parkland Grace  is a member of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team.  She volunteers in child care at Faith Church, works full-time summers at Diane’s Daycare and serves various families caring for children the year round.

Grace hopes to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and if not, serve in the Navy.  Prosthetic engineering, law and politics are strong areas of interest.

Grace was joined at our Club meeting by her parents, William and Holly Smith, and by Dr. Jude Sandt, Assistant Principal at Parkland.

Our Greeter today was Gary Heller and he did a marvelous job. Then he took all of the below photographs.

Pres. Amir showed some more pictures from the great Holiday Party. See elsewhere in this NL for even more, these from Shawn Fejes.

LOWHILL FOOD PANTRY:
Pres. Amir said that guest Justin Schell and others distributed produce last Saturday.

This great group still depends on cash donations from AW Rotarians. And volunteering for the produce pick-up and distribution on Saturday mornings is a very satisfying thing.

TEMPTING TASTES 6 MEETING:
Chair, Len Salines, said that there will be a planning meeting at the Holiday Inn this Friday morning.

THURSDAY EVENING SCHEDULE:
TOMORROW December 12  at 5:30 PM at the Holiday Inn, in The Pub.

The door prize bottle of wine donated by Gary Heller was won by Chuck Ehninger.

The $84 pot of the 50:50 was not won by Chris Blechschmidt’s ticket being drawn  followed by a white marble.  Five marbles will be back next time.

HAPPY DOLLARS
John Scott is happy to see the beautiful snow this morning.

Gail Micca is happy that so many neighbors helped out with donations for a homeless family.

Bill Palmer is happy that we had such a great party last Friday. AND is most happy that Dec. 7 has passed and the TV no longer is saturated with Medicare commercials.

Jeff Kistler said that Barbara and he really enjoyed the Holiday Party.

Jeff also noted that once again Dictionaries have been donated to the Northeast Bradford Elementary School, and he passed around some Thank You letters.

Ron Coleman was happy for Grace Smith and her “positivity.”

Chuck Ehninger thanked Amir, and his wife, for the great Holiday Party.

Al Lewis loved the Holiday Party. And he noted that snow in the Adirondacks is more powdery and more plentiful than here.

Geoff Legg believes that the “Happy one dollars” should be increased to “Happy 5 dollars”, especially for those over 60 years old. There was no applause.

Mitch Huston noted that the Muhlenberg football team is doing well.

PROGRAM:
Secretary John Scott introduced Hannah Milagio who is the Grant Evaluation Manager for the Community Bike Works. A few years ago AW Rotarians began donating funds to them.

Community Bike Works teaches life lessons through bicycles to the young people of Allentown and the Lehigh Valley who could benefit most. ... In Earn a Bike, students learn bike mechanics and safety while practicing reading, writing, teamwork and work ethic skills.

Hannah thanked AW Rotarians for our support and for inviting her here today. She told the story using a series of slides.

CBW provides “Life lessons through bicycles” There are 4 major programs:
         Bikes & Books
         Cycling
         Creating & Connecting
         College, Careers & Community
Hannah explained about “Bikes & Books: Junior Earn a Bike program.

Hannah noted that over their 25 years so far most participants are boys. But 3 years ago they started a Special Project: Girls’ Night Earn a Bike that is growing.

Bikes & Books: Earn a Book. Students at the end of class earn their refurbished bicycle and a new helmet. Other programs include Earn a Book, Afternoon Drop-in, and Youth Leadership. They also offer a range of cycling programs, including recreational rides, road riding, track cycling, and mountain biking.

The program Outcomes are:---
500 students in youth bike mentoring each year
90%+ students complete Earn a Bike & JrEAB to earn their bike and a new helmet
100% of students completing the program demonstrate bike repair and safety skills
85% of students self-report they are more active and better communicators
72% of students at a United Way community school improved their school attendance

Hannah described their Cycling Programs that takes students who have earned a bike onto bike trails, short and flat to start. They get longer over time even to 35 miles.

Hannah discussed Creating & Connecting: Drop-in, College, Careers & Community: Youth Leadership, College, Careers & Community: Youth Bike Summit, and Deep Mentoring: Gaining Traction.

How to get involved:
         Donate a bike
Mentor a student in Earn a Bike
         Sponsor a student
         tinyurl.com/BikeWorksGift

When asked, Hannah said they get funding from Grants and donations and some fundraisers. She answered other questions too.

CLOSING:
Pres. Amir closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
