MEMBERSHIP  IS  EVERY  MEMBER'S  BUSINESS

Each of us should seek out good candidates for our Rotary Club. Ask them to breakfast or to our Thursday evening meeting.

___________

Excuse me, do you have her email?

Yes! And so do you!      If you are a member of Allentown West Rotary, you have a ClubRunner (CR) account, and your phone number and e-mail address are in CR.

Need to contact a member for any reason? Download the ClubRunner app – it’s free, of course – and sign in! If you don’t know your password and login information, call Bill Palmer, and he will walk you through the process.  Why Bill? Because everyone knows how to get in touch with him! (Hint: just reply to this newsletter!)

Why would I want to use ClubRunner?

ClubRunner helps to organize us as a club. It is the platform for all our communications, and offers members an opportunity to stay in touch on various levels.

Here are just some reasons people use CR:
  • To call a member on club business, such as to get a ride to a meeting, find out the logistics of an event, or ask for help in getting club business done.
  • To make plans for a social gathering.
  • To check on their birthday so you could send a card. Or their address, same reason.
  • To check on their address before you head over to their house for an event, meeting, or to drop something off.
  • To find their email or phone number. Or work address.
  • Because you’ve forgotten the name of their spouse and you were up all night trying to remember it.
  • Find out the proper spelling of a member’s name.

What’s your best use of Club Runner?

Victor Riche-Roman
STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Victor Riche-Roman, a Senior at Lehigh Career and Technical Institute, was honored as our AWR Student-of-the-Month at the November 13, 2019.

Victor is recognized for his service through leadership in his school and community.  For the second year he was elected to serve as Class President, and he is President of Student Council..

A Level 2 student in the Criminal Justice program, he is a member of National Honor Society and is part of the first group of Academic Center Scholars who are earning college credits while enrolled at LCTI.

At his home school, William Allen, he is part of the Swim Team and Debate Team, holds membership in the National Speech and Debate Association.  He serves on the LCTI Safety Committee.

Outside of school Victor serves as a lifeguard.  In 2018 he worked as an intern for the Republican National Committee knocking on doors for the Fall election.  He was nominated for a Daughters of the American Revolution Award.

Ms. Jissell Marmolejos, Administrative Assistant for the Academic Center and Main Office, summarized, “Victor is a mature, eloquent, driven young man with aspirations to continue a life of service, possibly in politics.  His teachers appreciate his personality and zeal on top of his conscientious and thoughtful scholarship”.

Victor’s future plans are to go to law school.
Victor was joined at our meeting by his mother, Angela Roman.

There were no drawings and no Happy Dollars this morning.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH:
Victor Riche-Romancame forward with Dr. Covelle. Jeff Kistler conducted our Student of the Month award ceremony.  Dr. Covelle said many nice things about Victor. Victor has just been elected Class President  --  for the second year. See separate article.

PROGRAM:
Our meeting at the LCTI (Lehigh Career & Technical Institute)was held  in their restaurant. The Culinary Arts students and the Teaching Chef prepared a very nice breakfast buffet for us.

Barbara Kistler introduced Dr. Mark Covelle, Principal of the LCTI Academic Center. Mark holds two Masters degrees and a PhD in Education Management. For the last two years he has been the Principal of the 15 year old Academic Center.

The significance of this LCTI “Academic Center” is that instead of the “old days” with “Vo-Tech” schools where students were sent with the stigma of not being suited for college, now they can go to learn a trade and also learn English, Math, History, etc.

LCTI serves 9 School Districts with 12 High Schools. Before there was an Academic Center the students would be bused to LCTI for half a day, and then back to their High Schools. Now students come to LCTI and stay for the full school day. They currently have 325 students at the Academic Center, and can go to 400.

Dr. Covelle has made some significant changes involving the Academic Center. One “biggie” was the shutting down of the bell system announcing the  class period changes. This added more trust to the students every day.

Mark is using some student free time each day and has brought in special teachers for personal finances, personal Taxes, etc. This is one reason why Dr. Covelle says “LCTI is a special place.”

LCTI also has an advantage of being on the campus of a college  --  LCCC. Some students can take advanced courses by walking across the campus and earn college credits.

When asked about funding for LCTI, Dr. Covelle said that about 70% comes from the school districts that they serve. The students receive diplomas from those High Schools, not LCTI. The other 30% comes from state aid and grants.

Dr. Covelle emphasizes that LCTI leads to “College AND Career.” They try to make the “implicit” become “explicit.” And since they are only 15 years old, all of their facilities and equipment are up to date and modern.

CLOSING:
Pres. Amir closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
