PHOTO  REQUEST

AW Rotarians do a lot of good things and take a lot of pictures. In order to maintain the best quality photos on file, it is requested that the original be sent first to Gary Heller, our RC Photographer.
____________

MEMBERSHIP  IS  EVERY  MEMBER'S  BUSINESS

Each of us should seek out good candidates for our Rotary Club. Ask them to breakfast or to our Thursday evening meeting.

___________

Excuse me, do you have her email?

Yes! And so do you!      If you are a member of Allentown West Rotary, you have a ClubRunner (CR) account, and your phone number and e-mail address are in CR.

Need to contact a member for any reason? Download the ClubRunner app – it’s free, of course – and sign in! If you don’t know your password and login information, call Bill Palmer, and he will walk you through the process.  Why Bill? Because everyone knows how to get in touch with him! (Hint: just reply to this newsletter!)

Why would I want to use ClubRunner?

ClubRunner helps to organize us as a club. It is the platform for all our communications, and offers members an opportunity to stay in touch on various levels.

Here are just some reasons people use CR:
  • To call a member on club business, such as to get a ride to a meeting, find out the logistics of an event, or ask for help in getting club business done.
  • To make plans for a social gathering.
  • To check on their birthday so you could send a card. Or their address, same reason.
  • To check on their address before you head over to their house for an event, meeting, or to drop something off.
  • To find their email or phone number. Or work address.
  • Because you’ve forgotten the name of their spouse and you were up all night trying to remember it.
  • Find out the proper spelling of a member’s name.

What’s your best use of Club Runner?

GREEN THUMBS GARDEN PROJECT

Gail Micca reports that our garden project is off to a great start and we are attracting help from many places.  The Greenawalds Boy Scout troop #8 will be meeting us at 6 pm Thursday July 9th to learn how help and they will be digging in too.

Some boys will learn how our new water pump works, some will build trellises and some will water and weed.  There will be some good learning and many helpful hands which always makes the work lighter.

Thank you to Jeanne and Carrie for coming to help.  Amanda Lawler from the Parkland C.A.R.E.S. Food Pantry has been instrumental in gathering needed soil for the raised beds, as well as 50 plants. She also helped me set up the Facebook page (see link below) and the Sign Up Genius page.  Her friend, Casandra Moyer has brought so much garden knowledge, hard work and plant donations as well.  Her friend, Ashley donated 100 plants.  Through these new Rotary connections, Deb and Gary Haas have joined the gardening team.  Do you see a pattern?  Rotary truly connects people when we put projects like this into the community.

Would you like to join the fun? If you would like to sign up to water and weed, please check out the sign up genius here:
 https://www.signupgenius.com/go/904044faead23a1fe3-allentownwest

If you know someone who would like to help, please feel free to share the link with them.  Let's keep connecting!

I am happy to meet you there to introduce you and then let you rip those little weeds out while you whistle a happy tune.  It's such a happy peaceful place to be.  I hope you consider helping - you will love it.

PROGRAM:
Amir Famili  introduced “the one and only” Rotarian Dr. Bob Gordon to discuss "Researching telepsychotherapy during the pandemic and what can we learn about keeping our relations.”

Dr. Bob is double board ABPP certified, teaches clinical and forensic assessment and is well published in peer refereed journals. He has written 9 books and over 90 articles. He does  worldwide consultations through video conferencing or phone. He has been in practice since 1976 specializing in Psychoanalysis and Forensic Psychology.

Dr. Bob now is a licensed psychologist in Florida and in Pennsylvania. He is an expert diagnostician and does forensic, employment assessments,

Bob described how he had to undergo being psychoanalyzed 4 days a week for almost all 5 years that he was attending school to become a psychoanalyst himself. That’s over 8 years of post-graduate study.

Using a series of PowerPoint slides  ---   copies are available upon request  --  Dr. Bob led us through the year+ research that he did with 4 minute surveys. And over his many years of doing research he has learned to ask survey questions that will yield usable responses.

Here is an abstract written by Dr. Bob about his presentation:

“We received 1,490 survey responses from practitioners from 56 regions and countries who remotely treated patients psychoanalytically during the early phase of the pandemic. We assessed their opinion of the effectiveness of teletherapy vs. in-office treatment and their concept of what matters most in psychoanalytic treatment.

“We found that practitioners increased in their positive opinions of teletherapy during the pandemic, and expected teletherapy to become a stable part of their practice in the future, especially when the patient is house-bound or when travel would be difficult or impractical.

“Those with mainly negative opinions, generally feel that working with transference, resistance and relational problems are not effective in distance analytic treatment, while those with mainly positive opinions feel that distance analytic treatment is effective with these issues. Those with mainly negative opinions also had less value of teletherapy for the patient who is homebound or when travel would be impractical. In general, the survey supports the principle hypothesis that therapist factors (empathy, warmth, wisdom and skillfulness) and patient factors (motivation, insightfulness and high functioning) are much more important in the effectiveness of psychoanalytic psychotherapy than the use of teletherapy, number of sessions a week, cultural similarity, or use of the couch.

“e can generalized from this study on professional teletherapy relationships to that of friends and family relationships. The warm, supportive and caring emotions can be conveyed over telecommunications. That is what matters most to the quality of life.”

Bob said that it was wonderful to see us all today. And he answered some questions.

Later Pres. Ralph sent Bob a thank you note and a complimentary raffle ticket.

CLOSING:
Pres. Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
