PROGRAM:
Pres. Amir introduced his long-time friend Nick Mittica, who discussed the Hydrogen Energy Systems at Air Products, This is all about the automobile that operates using hydrogen fuel in a fuel cell.
Nick graduated from Linden High school, received his BS in Chemical Eng. from Purdue University, and then earned an MBA from Lehigh University.
He worked for P&G for 4 years before joining Air Products in 1998, where he served in various coating marketing role including managing the 70 MM business for 16 years. He joined the Hydrogen System 14 years ago and currently is serving as its Commercial Manager.
Nick was pleased to be with Rotarians today, since he has been volunteering most of his life. He has worked for 20 years with the Bike Works, also one we support.
Using a series of slides, Nick explained the way these cars work and provided some facts. He first stated that Hydrogen is a Carbon Free alternative to gasoline as a car fuel.
Nick said that there now are over 60 years of experience with hydrogen fuel cells. Air Products is one of largest hydrogen producers in the world. They produce ~7 million Kilograms (kgs) /day which is over 3 billion standard cubic feet.
Bulk, liquid hydrogen -- H2 -- uses pipeline distribution. H2 energy projects have been around since 1993
There are over 200 hydrogen station projects, and 1,500,000 fuelings, involving Twenty countries.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Currently it is an industrial commodity used to produce gasoline, steel, electronics, glass and hydrogenated oils.
Also it is used as an alternative fuel that is Carbon free, Non-toxic, Sustainable and we have Energy Independence. It is Commonly produced from natural gas or biogas (CH4) and water (H2O).
Nick asked the audience whether a Hydrogen fuel cell car also is an electric car. The answer is “Yes.”
Nick then explained how Fuel Cell Vehicles Work. A fuel cell is an electric generator that uses H2 and O2 – Oxygen - to produce heat, power and water. Fuel cells are 2 3 times more efficient than internal combustion engines. The Form, Fit and Function of H2 fuel cell cars are consistent with driver’s expectations.
Nick reviewed the H2 car that he brought with him today. It is a Toyota Mirai. Later we went out front and saw it up close.
California, having severe anti-pollution laws ended up the first area where Hydrogen refueling stations were installed and allowed H2 cars to operate effectively. Toyota, Hyundai and Honda have launched carscommercially in select markets. Available for purchase or lease. Greater than 7,000 fuel cell cars have been sold. Nick desribed the simple steps involved in adding H2 to its car.
