DID YOU KNOW ABOUTTHE EARLY DAYS OF  ROTARY  AND THE POLIO VACCINE?

On September 29, 1979, volunteers administered drops of oral polio vaccine to children at a health center in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, Philippines. The event in metropolitan Manila was arranged and attended by Rotarians and delegates from the Philippine Ministry of Health. put the first drops of vaccine into a child’s mouth, he ceremonially launched the Philippine poliomyelitis immunization effort. Rotary’s first Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grant project was underway.

Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine.

The number of new cases ACROSS THE WORLD in the early 1980s went from 1,100 EACH DAY to the current new cases of 40 YTD in Afghanistan, and 65 YTD in Pakistan. BUT until it is completely gone, this disease  is just a plane ride away from the U.S.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST EXAMPLE:
Marlene asked for a volunteer or two to tell a story indicative of their application of ethical standards recently.

Marlene told of the folks who bought raffle tickets after the closing time. One option was just to issue tickets that were not in the mix to draw. But they gave the money back  --  and were told to keep it for the club.

Pres. Ralph displayed the list of members and their September celebration dates.

WHAT ROTARY MEANS TO ME:
PDG Bill Palmer said that Rotary membership is a great way for anyone to give back and make a positive difference. Gwenn Carr said she has received pictures from about 20 people for the Look Book, and that $300 in donations are in.

Kathy Ott is happy to be with us and happy that she is about to retire.

Ralph Witcher is happy that their son, Seth, performed at Luther Crest and got good reviews.

PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Carol Ferguson, D7430 chair of the Polio Plus committee to discuss “Polio Truths”. Carol  is a member of Doylestown Rotary Club and is the Polio Plus Coordinator for our District.
She’s the Founder of the PA Polio Survivor's Network whose mission of service is to bring credible information about the late effects of polio to ALL polio survivors and their caregivers.
Carol is married for 48 years, mother of two grown sons and grandmother of 4. Carol is a survivor -  at age 2 she got Polio.

This presentation aims to help our club members better understanding the "Plus" in Polio Plus.
Polio Plus includes:
•        PREVENTING DISEASE
•        PROVIDING CLEAN WATER
•        CREATING JOBS
•        IMPROVING HEALTH CARE

Carol said that she is pleased to be with us again. She and other survivors have been attending the annual District 5K Race to end Polio. She thanks us for managing that event and for its great results as a fundraiser each year.

There are nine members in the Survivor’s Network. There are about 15 Million Polio Survivors around the world, with 750,000 of them here in the U.S. The Network is trying to draw attention to the effect of Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS Carol says “polio stinks.”   “It’s a lousy disease.”

The Salk vaccine was first and it needed to be injected. The Sabine vaccine followed and it was administered orally which opened up the idea of covering the world.

One truth we may not know is that Polio attacks TWICE, once when you get it, and again when you are much older.. The latter is PPS. This adds more disabilities, and Carol gave some examples. Victims are surrounded by care and still can live a full life. And once we get to zero cases, it still will be a full generation before it is gone.

In September of 2016 Carol went to RI HQ in Evanston, IL to present them with a thank you gift. The real thank you goes to all Rotarians.

In October of 2013 we declared Polio type 3 gone. And last month we declared Africa to be Polio free.

Carol’s final truth today: All children need to be vaccinated.

CLOSING:
Pres Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
