PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Carol Ferguson, D7430 chair of the Polio Plus committee to discuss “Polio Truths”. Carol is a member of Doylestown Rotary Club and is the Polio Plus Coordinator for our District.
She’s the Founder of the PA Polio Survivor's Network whose mission of service is to bring credible information about the late effects of polio to ALL polio survivors and their caregivers.
Carol is married for 48 years, mother of two grown sons and grandmother of 4. Carol is a survivor - at age 2 she got Polio.
This presentation aims to help our club members better understanding the "Plus" in Polio Plus.
Polio Plus includes:
• PREVENTING DISEASE
• PROVIDING CLEAN WATER
• CREATING JOBS
• IMPROVING HEALTH CARE
Carol said that she is pleased to be with us again. She and other survivors have been attending the annual District 5K Race to end Polio. She thanks us for managing that event and for its great results as a fundraiser each year.
There are nine members in the Survivor’s Network. There are about 15 Million Polio Survivors around the world, with 750,000 of them here in the U.S. The Network is trying to draw attention to the effect of Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS Carol says “polio stinks.” “It’s a lousy disease.”
The Salk vaccine was first and it needed to be injected. The Sabine vaccine followed and it was administered orally which opened up the idea of covering the world.
One truth we may not know is that Polio attacks TWICE, once when you get it, and again when you are much older.. The latter is PPS. This adds more disabilities, and Carol gave some examples. Victims are surrounded by care and still can live a full life. And once we get to zero cases, it still will be a full generation before it is gone.
In September of 2016 Carol went to RI HQ in Evanston, IL to present them with a thank you gift. The real thank you goes to all Rotarians.
In October of 2013 we declared Polio type 3 gone. And last month we declared Africa to be Polio free.
Carol’s final truth today: All children need to be vaccinated.
CLOSING:
Pres Ralph led us in the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
