         QUOTE of the WEEK --

“One wise truth of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others. If you haven't done much giving in your life—try it and see how you feel afterwards.”

PROGRAM:
Our program today was our annual Scholarship Awards to Students attending Northwestern, Parkland, LCCC and LCTI. As the Committee Chair, Barbara Kistler conducted the presentations.

Dr. Kistler introduced LCCC’s Dr. Thomas Meyer who welcomed AW Rotarians, students and their families to LCCC. He thanked AW Rotarians for their generosity in presenting these scholarships.

Barbara Kistler explained that the Allentown-West Rotarians award eight $1000 scholarships to students  from Northwestern Lehigh High School, Parkland High School, Lehigh Career and Technical Institute and  Lehigh Carbon Community College.  They  also  award a very special $500 scholarship in memory of Rotarian Michael Henry.

Students applied for these scholarships by completing an online application requiring general information including academic performance and paragraphs describing school and community service involvement, leadership skills, and future career goals.  Service and leadership were the twin characteristics which formed the basis of the selection process along with a strong academic record.

Dr. Kistler introduced Mr. Ed Buddenhagen, General Manager at Amazon.com  in Breinigsville. Ed said he was pleased to be here today and be part of these awards. As each winner was introduced Ed presented  her or him with a Kindle Fire compliments of Amazon.com.

Lehigh Career and Technical Institute
School Representative:  Dr. Mark Covelle, Academic Center Principal The winner: Juleeanna Held

Lehigh Carbon Community College winners:
Aldonair Alphonse and Sydney Geist
Dr. Tim Rushton thanked AW Rotarians and praised this annual program.

Northwestern Lehigh High School
School Representative: Ms. Jennifer Holman, Superintendent  --  winners:
         Morgan Bentley and
                  Meghan McDonald

Jean Machamer, the AW Advisor to the NWL Interact Club explained how the members raised money over the school year, eventually culminating in a check for $1,000 for a ShelterBox.

Parkland High School
School Representative: Dr. Jude Sandt, Assistant Principal of Parkland High School winners:
Saniya Pangare, Olivia Faenza and Kira Halma

Dr. Sandt said nice things about the winners and thanked AW Rotarians for their continued support of PHS activities.

The Michael Henry Memorial Scholarship Award went to:
Mikayla McGarr from Parkland High School.
Mike Henry’s niece, Cindy Rosevelt was present to make the award.

Mike Henry was a beloved Rotarian passing away in 2017.  Funds given in his memory were designated to be used for a scholarship.  Mike did believe in “service above self” especially when it came to organizing the Pig Roasts. We miss his willingness to help set up equipment to help our meetings go well.

Many pictures were taken by Rotarian Gary Heller, and the student’s families and Sue from the Parkland Press. Certificates and checks were presented to each winner by our AWRC President Jeanne Shipe. Barb Kistler had a slide made with their picture for each winner.

THE WINNERS:

CLOSING:
Chair Barbara Kistler had the group sing God Bless America, and then  say the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag.

Pres. Jeanne closed our meeting by our reciting the saying “One profits most who serves best.”
