THE WORLD NEEDS MORE ROTARIANS

Make it your business to share your Rotary story! When you meet someone who isn't aware of all Rotary has to offer personally, professionally, and to the world, it's an opportunity. Let them know you are one of the 1.4 million people in the world who make the world better by serving the community.

Offer them the chance to join us for an activity or a meeting to learn more. If you don't ask, they won't know! Be a Rotary Ambassador!

National Roller Coaster Day

______________________

DID YOU KNOW?

This holiday is always celebrated on August 16

Life is like a roller coaster, filled with ups and downs. Sometimes it’s a little scary and intimidating, yet it’s oh-so exciting. It’s late summer and today is National Roller Coaster Day. Let’s not let this beautiful day go by without giving recognition to one of the great, summertime thrills. Gather the family. Text your friends. On this August 16 holiday, let’s go to the closest amusement park and ride a roller coaster or two. The more loops and vertical drops, the better!

You’ll find people young and old riding roller coasters. You’re never too old to ride a roller coaster. This author had an aunt who rode them with joy well into her 80s! For some people, riding roller coasters is like a cult following. It becomes addicting. These thrill seekers travel the country, intent on experiencing every roller coaster they can find.

Allentown West Rotary  Club
Non-Meeting Notes – Aug 16, 2023

Today there was no meeting nor tour, etc. So these notes are to keep you current on club issues.

CELEBRATIONS:
The member celebrations for August are listed below.

CALENDAR – AUGUST:
The August AWRC calendar has events, birthdays and weddings and Rotary anniversaries – cakes indicate birthdays, rotary symbols indicate rotary anniversaries and hearts are wedding anniversaries.

AWRC ANNUAL PICNIC A HUGE SUCCESS:
Fifty Rotarians and friends attended our annual picnic on Saturday, August 12th. The weather was lovely and there was great fellowship among the first-time and the veteran picnickers.

First-timers included Patty and Matt Mulqueen, Earnie and Brouke, Dhruv, Peter and our STEM YEA 2023 student, Rosy Nester. Rosy was accompanied by her Mom, Natalie.

Reverend Jeff Kistler provided the invocation before we began eating three courses of various appetizers, main courses, and desserts.

We celebrated Bill Weber, Ralph Witcher and Marlene Heller’s birthdays with a yummy birthday cake.

Ur Peace Scholar, Nick Millward zoomed in at 6 PM EST to provide us with more information about the recent “Row-a-thon” and to update us on his final semester of studies. Nick hopes to be back with us in January for a short visit.

Thanks go to our picnic sponsor Bill Palmer and all those who provided various foods and lugged, set up and took down tables, chairs and tents.

Special thanks go to Chris and Cindy Hornaman for their amazing and continuing support of our club.

YOUTH EXCHANGE:
We still need a second host family for our Exchange student this school year.

IMPACT CLUB:
Diana Dunn is starting the Impact Club. She is meeting with various potential members and checking on various activities that they could perform.

An IMPACT club is another Innovative Club model - a "Service-Only" version of a Satellite club. It's an extension of your Rotary club, populated by members interested only in service project participation. No meeting, no meal.

GREEN THUMB GARDENS:
Gail Micca reports “Our gardens are finally producing some gorgeous tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant and herbs.

We have 2-3 harvests per week now, so please let Gail know when you can come and help.

If you have a business and would like to send some employees over to harvest and post a photo on social media, we can do that too!

Working with Plant a Row has been very helpful with getting produce delivered quickly.  We have also had some help from Parkland Garden Club members.  See you at the garden!”

SNACK PACKING:
The next Snack Packing event at Parkland is in September.
If anyone wants to help, they should email Diana Dunn at dunndianas@gmail.com

The NWL Snack Packing date If we start in September, it will be the 3rd Wednesday starting at 2:00. Each month will be the 3rd Wednesday from 2-2:35.

KINGDOM LIFE FOOD DISTRIBUTION:
The upcoming dates for Kingdom Life Food Pantry Giveaway are --

          September 9                 October 14
November 11                December 9

PARKLAND C.A.R.E.S. PRODUCE DELIVERY:
The Pantry will hold its food distributions on the first Saturday of each month for all of 2023.
Three volunteers are needed each time.
Food collections for Parkland C.A.R.E.S. will be held the third Wednesday of each month at the Pantry on Kernsville Road.

MEALS ON WHEELS:
Meal delivery by AW Rotarians takes place twice each week.  Helen Papathanasiou always needs substitute volunteers.

MEETING SCHEDULE:
The second and fourth Wednesday of each month is In-Person meetings at Cedar Crest College.

The first Wednesday of each month will be a Dining Out meeting, or equal. It might not be on a Wednesday.

The third Wednesday of each month will be reserved for AWRC committee meetings to which everyone is welcome.
