PROGRAM:
Pres. Ralph Witcher introduced Kathleen Ott, PhD to give her Classification Talk. Kathy is the Director of Data, Grants & Special Programs at Northampton Area School District
Ralph refers to Kathy as the “Bionic Woman of Grants.” She has obtained over $21 million of grants for the Northampton School District. AND she bakes very large and very special cakes.
Ralph had one of Kathy’s cakes for his birthday last week. Also she made the wedding cake for Brittany and Nick Friday a few weeks ago. She showed a series of pictures of her baking skills, including a Halloween cake.
Kathy said it was her privilege to be here today. She explained that she had been a member of the Northampton RC until about 2005.
Kathy was born and raised in Allentown. She attended Allen High School and then went to E. Stroudsburg Business School. Later she obtained degrees from Lehigh University, and in 2001 she earned her PhD from Widener University.
Kathy has 4 children and 8 grandchildren. She now is 70 years old, and she will retire effective December 31, 2020.
She said raising children taught her many things, e.g. she has a temper. And she learned humility. As their grandchildren were born she maintained a club-like relationship with them.
After Business School Kathy was a Corporate Secretary for 15 years and worked on Dorney Park projects. Then in 1986 she went back to school at Kutztown University, and then to Lehigh U. In 1999 she became the Northampton H.S. Principal.
Kathy writes all Federal and State grant applications. And $6 million of them involved competition. And some of her NSD efforts include:
Starting Pre-K Programs
Began a “No place for hate” program to combat bullying 6 years ago
Got $750,000 for five full-time Counselors to work with K thru 12 students who have experienced one or more traumas. Kathy said that there were 120 children in the Middle School last year who have experienced multiple traumas.
After retiring in December Kathy wants to do other things. One effort is to help others, which is why she became an AW Rotarians. And she plans to continue baking large cakes. As she keeps busy she wants to address three things: Home, Health and Heaven.
