President Jeanne Shipe rang the bell at 7:30 A.M. to open the meeting. And then she gave a very nice invocation about unity.
Pres. Jeanne began the meeting having the members recite the Four-way Test. Then we recited the pledge of allegiance to the U.S. Flag.

Pres. Jeanne is planning to review the many Rotary resources we have available, at next week’s meeting.

President Jeanne also noted that Barbara Kistler will be taking on the RI Foundation committee work, and John Scott will replace Herb Klotz as our Membership Chair.
NEW AWRC BANNER DESIGN SOUGHT:
Pres. Jeanne showed a picture of the state of PA with Allentown located to get the conversation going. Ralph Witcher suggested Dorney Park as a local symbol in the area we serve. It was suggested that 3 designs be created and then members vote on a winner.
RESTAURANT ADVERTISING NEEDED:
We need twelve (12) or more Restaurants to support Tempting Tastes 5, and we only have 4 so far. AW Rotarians are asked to tell restaurants that they use that AW Rotarians are eating there. We now have a sign to exhibit as we do our monthly Dining Out events.

OTARY LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:
On Saturday, October 20th there is an RLI (Rotary Leadership Institute) training session at DeSales University. AWRC members will have their registration fees reimbursed after they attend. This is a great opportunity to learn all about Rotary.
AWRC ANNUAL ROTARY SERVICE AWARD:
Chair Chuck Ehninger has nominating forms. Please send your ideas to him by September 30th.
THE NEXT THURSDAY EVENING MEETING will be TOMORROW, August 23rd at 5:30 P.M. at the Holiday Inn in Breinigsville. The program is planning for the Purple Pinkie 5K.
PURPLE PINKIE IS COMINE:
October 13th at LCCC is the date for the 5K run and Fun walk to raise funds to eradicate the last few cases of Polio from the world.
Herb Klotz lists 4 areas of need to make this AWRC event successful for our District again this year:
1. Participants to run or walk should sign up on Herb’s list, or go to purplepinkie.net to register.
2. If some members will not Run or Walk, please volunteer to help control car traffic, race directions, food distribution, or registration on site. Randy Beitler is the contact.
3. Make pledges to sponsor folks who will be racing.
4. Donate gift cards which are a highlight of the event that we raffle off at the end. Jennifer Stinson is the contact.
DISTRICT 7430 FOUNDATION SEMINAR:
This annual RI Foundation Seminar is scheduled for Saturday November 10th at MONTCO CC in Blue Bell.
SPECIAL 5K RUN:
Halyna Stegura reminds us that this Saturday, August 25th there is a 5K race or 1K walk fundraiser to benefit prostate cancer research. It will be held at Steels Stacks in Bethlehem.-- 9 A.M start time.
ZIEGELS CHURCH PICNIC:
Saturday August 25th from 4 to 9 P.M. is the picnic that Jeff Kistler asks us to support. These folks regularly help with our Snack Pack program.
OFFSITE AW MEETING PLAN:
Pres. Jeanne is planning to schedule Northwestern SD and LCTI for this Fall. And then the Parkland SD and LCCC events will be in the Spring.
AWRC GRANTS STATUS:
Pres. Jeanne mentioned the District Grant we are doing with 4 other RCs for a new Garden for the Second Harvest. And we will be buying shelving for the Threads of Change container storage unit at the Holiday Inn. We are waiting for the D7430 grant funds to arrive.
And we have pledged $4,000 from our funds to support a Global Grant being led by the Doylestown RC for a Mobile Medical Unit for New Mexico. That is still being put together.
Also please tell Pres. Jeanne and Barb Kistler your suggestions for 2019-20 District Grants. Those applications start going in soon.
NEXT MEETING -- August 29th Our Greeter will be Joe Goll. The program will be a review of the many Rotary Resources that are available to us.
Pres. Jeanne introduced S-a-A Mitch Huston who conducted the drawings and picked up the Happy Dollars.
CORRECTION:
As inconceivable as it may be, your Editor reversed the results of last week’s drawings. In fact Jerry Frank won the door prize, and Ron Coleman had the chance at the 50:50.
The door prize today was tickets to the Allentown Fair donated by Geoff Legg, and they were won by Dave Dries.
The 50:50 pot of $18 was not won .by Ralph Witcher whose ticket was drawn. Many marbles return.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Bob Gordon extends thanks to Sue and Bill Weber for hosting our fabulous picnic last Sunday.
Sue Weber is delighted that they hosted the 18th annual Weber picnic and that there was no rain at all. She said we all loved meeting Andrea from Croatia, our Youth Exchange student this year.
Bill Palmer’s grandson, Nathaniel, currently starting year two at UVA Law, had his first interview for next year’s internship with a NYC Law firm on Tuesday and on Friday received a firm offer. He still has more interviews.
Bill also reports that granddaughter, Shaina, also last Friday completed her 9 weeks internship in Miami receiving a firm job offer for next Spring after she is graduated from Hopkins in Bio Material Engineering
Gail Micca is happy to be a Great Aunt. She also is pleased to be going to Tacoma, WA to see her son.
Halyna Stegura is happy about the great picnic. And she is very happy that all four children will be visiting this weekend -- a rare event.
David Haight is happy that he is making good progress on getting out of NJ to be full time at Luther Crest.
Ernie Boll thanks all for the picnic.
Herb Klotz is happy that Ronne4e and he visited the Lee RC while touring in Scotland.
PROGRAM:
President Jeanne reviewed the survey results from two months ago. She distributed lists of comments from members about what to keep, what to stop, and what to add -- to our AWRC operations.
Herb Klotz was the designated scribe, and Bob Gordon was the Coach. We discussed a number of suggestions -- these also came from our Thursday evening group.
Of course the breakfast food options and quality were talked about. Interestingly one comment was “Keep the good food,” and another was to improve the food. It was noted that for a few dollars more we can expand the food selections. But the quality is what it is.
Some members mentioned the singing that was part of every meeting until a year + ago. Old-timers remember the Rotary song books that we had on our breakfast tables. Ralph Zettlemoyer used to lead us in a song or two each week. One recommendation is to include a patriotic song at each meeting.
The suggestion to drop projects that do not have a committed leader was reviewed. Mostly the feeling is to find a way to keep all of our projects going. Of course adding new members should provide additional volunteers.
Bob Gordon noted that what Rotarians actually do still is unknown to the community. He urges us to wear our pins when we go out, and our AW apparel too. We now have signs to display in restaurants when we go to eat as a group.
The bulk of what we do and our routines seem to be OK with most members. That’s good to know. Our leaders always welcome our ideas on where we want our club to go.
