There were registered runners and walkers; fees, individual sponsors, corporate sponsors and Thirty Five (35) D7430 Rotary Club sponsors that have generated over $28,000 from this Districtwide event that will go to help eradicate the Polio disease from the earth.
And the Gates Foundation will match the proceeds Two for One, adding another $56,000. That $84,000 will fund the vaccinations for about 112,000 Children. That is wonderful.
There were three Polio Survivors present and Carol Ferguson of the Doylestown RC addressed the crowd as part of the pre-race introductions.
Yvette Palmer’s family, PDG Bill Palmer, daughter, Kim Pyne, and her husband Bill, and granddaughter Arista Pyne were there. PDG Bill gave the signal to start the race. The others did the Fun Walk.
Our District Governor, Rick Gromis welcomed all the participants, and thanked them for coming. PDG Tony Jannetta helped out too, as did DGN Herb Klotz and DGE Cindy Hornaman and husband, Chris, the real photographer.
Dr. Bob Gordon, as is our custom, mounted his bicycle and led the runners through the first lap.
Among the medal winners was AW’s Chris Blechschmidt, who came in second. And his daughter earned a medal in her age class. Herb Klotz won in his age bracket too.
There were many other winners of a bunch of many kinds of gift cards that were given out by random drawings of the participants’ registration numbers.
It was an excellent event with fabulous results. Thanks go to AWRC members and other district Rotarians for making this happen as a district-wide effort.
