PROGRAM:
Lily and Angela from Parkland H.S. were introduced by Neidig Chair, Mike Gschwendtner, to describe their experiences while attending Camp Neidig (RYLA) last month as our guests
Lily Rodgers
Angela Roccamo
Both of these “campers” are members of the Parkland High School Interact Club. After H.S. Lily intends to attend college and work in the Allied Health Field. Angela will attend college and work with people and relationships.
Using a series of slides the two took turns describing their Camp Neidig experience from their Friday P.M. arrival to the Monday evening Closing ceremony. Both said that upon arrival it was scary and they were apprehensive. They did not know anybody else and they would be assigned to different groups for the weekend. But it seemed that everyone was scared a bit.
They agreed that overall it was a great experience and they learned a lot. They all were close friends by Monday evening.
We saw a picture of Angela’s cabin. She was assigned to the Mohawk Tribe. And Lily was assigned to the Shawnee Tribe. Mike Gschwendtner was the Shawnee Tribe Counselor. They stayed with their tribe members for most of the daytime.
One of the first decisions they each had to make was to which “workshop” they would belong. Lily found herself telling her tribe members how good she would be as a Yearbook Editor -- and that’s what she did. Angela chose the Interaction workshop.
The problem solving exercises taught them always to communicate and build trust, and to provide encouragement to others.
They enjoyed the talks about leadership skills and to persevere and build a strong team. They had Field Days when they played soccer and volleyball. Angela’s was in the rain a bit.
These campers are enthusiastic about their experiences. And they thanked A-W Rotarians for sponsoring them. Sue Weber thanked them for their presentation, saying this is a great Rotary program.
